Delhi: EC Removes South-East Delhi DCP After Two Firing Incidents

The poll panel's move to shift Biswal, a 2008 batch IPS officer, comes following two incidents of civilian firing, over the past two-three days, at Shaheen Bagh and the Jamia area, ahead of the February 8 Delhi Assembly elections.

New Delhi: The Election Commission on Sunday ordered shifting of Delhi Police's DCP, SouthEast, Chinmoy Biswal whose charge includes Shaheen Bagh, the scene of anti-CAA protests since the past 50 days, with immediate effect, after two firing incidents rocked the national capital. The poll body has directed Kumar Gyanesh to take charge of the post. The poll panel's move to shift Biswal, a 2008 batch IPS officer, comes following two incidents of civilian firing, over the past two-three days, at Shaheen Bagh and the Jamia area, ahead of the February 8 Delhi Assembly elections. An Election Commission release said that Biswal "stands relieved from his present post with immediate effect and shall report to the MHA". Biswas has been directed by the Election Commission to report to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) for further orders. "Chinmoy Biswal IPS (2008), DCP (South-East) stands relieved from his present post with immediate effect and shall report to MHA. In view of the ongoing situation, Commission directs Kumar Gyanesh, DANIPS (1997) shall take charge as DCP (South-East) immediately," said Election Commission in a statement. "The Ministry of Home Affairs or Delhi Commissioner of Police may however immediately send a panel of three names to the EC for  posting a suitable officer as the regular DCP (South-East)," the statement read. The EC has also directed the Delhi Chief Secretary to file a compliance report on the shifting. On Saturday, a man, later identified as Kapil Gujjar of Dallupura village in east Delhi, fired three bullets in the air in Shaheen Bagh area after warning protesters to vacate the spot. He also shouted communal slogans. He was apprehended by the police. On Thursday, a youth opened fire with a country-made .315 bore pistol when the Jamia students were to start their march from Jamia Millia Islamia to Rajghat. It left a journalism student, Shadab, with injuries on his arm.
