Covid-19: Mumbai Records 70% Rise, Delhi Reports Nearly 50% Jump In Single Day Cases | 10 Key Points

The Kejriwal-led Delhi government imposed yellow alert as the infection rate stayed above the critical mark for two days in a row

New Delhi: In a new grim record, Delhi witnessed a massive 50 percent rise in Covid cases with 496 fresh cases while Mumbai recorded a 70 percent rise with a fresh 1,377 Covid cases over the last 24 hours. There was one death reported in both cities.

As the country gears up for the third Covid-19 wave, states have already implemented precautionary measures ahead of the New Year festivities. 

Here are 10 Points to Note

• The 50 per cent spike in the national capitial comes amid the Yellow Alert issued at 3:00 pm on Tuesday.

• On Monday, Delhi saw the highest single-day spike in covid cases since June 2, early this year. The positivity rate in the city stands at 0.89 per cent, the highest since May 31.

• Mumbai’s 70 per cent surge has been reported after the city saw a marginal decline in the number of covid cases. On Monday, Mumbai recorded 809 new cases, 113 less than Sunday including three deaths.

• Maharashtra on Tuesday recorded 2,172 new Covid cases and 22 deaths, according to news agency ANI. However, no Omicron cases were reported. Meanwhile, the state’s fatality rate stood at 2.12 per cent.

• The Kejriwal-led Delhi government imposed curbs and restrictions as the infection rate stayed above the critical mark for two days in a row

• Under the new curbs, schools, colleges and educational institutions, cinema halls and gyms will be shut and malls and shops will open on an odd-even basis within fixed hours.

• Delhi CM has said that the new Covid-19 cases in the city have been mild, and the majority of patients did not require oxygen support or treatment in an intensive care unit ward.

• While Mumbai imposed night curfew and various other restrictions across the state on Friday during the festive season amid Omicron variant threat.

• Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope has stated that fresh lockdown will be imposed only if the demand for medical oxygen touches 800 metric tons per day.

• The Maharasthra government banned the assembly of more than five people in public places between 9 pm to 6 am and capped the number of people allowed at public functions.
