Maharashtra recorded 154 COVID-19 cases and two deaths, which took place in Mumbai and Nagpur, a health official told PTI. The number of cases of the JN.1 variant reached 139 in the state, he added.
India recorded a single-day rise of 774 cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours on Sunday. Two deaths -- one each from Tamil Nadu and Gujarat -- were reported in a span of 24 hours, according to the ministry's data updated at 8 am.
Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao says more tests are being conducted in the state. "Since we've received information about the Covid case here, we are keeping a complete check...Our department is also vigilant," says the minister.
Doctors in Singapore have said that the latest Covid-19 wave has peaked in the country. According to a report by Channel News Asia, the doctors are seeing cases stabilise, down by around 20 per cent from December.
However, the doctors have said that they are watching out for possible surges in the coming months.
New Delhi, Jan 5 (PTI) Certain bacteria in the gut can enhance the immune response to the mRNA Covid vaccine, whereas others may weaken it, a study has found.
The gut microbiome is the collection of microorganisms that live in our digestive tract. It plays an important role in many aspects of our health, such as digestion, metabolism, and immunity.
In the study published in the journal npj Biofilms and Microbiomes, researchers collected stool samples from 68 people living with HIV and 75 healthy individuals before their first mRNA COVID vaccine dose.
The team from Karolinska Institutet in Sweden analysed the microbiome composition using a technique called 16S rRNA sequencing, which identifies the types and relative abundance of bacteria in the samples.
Until January 4, 619 cases of Covid subvariant JN.1 had been documented from 12 states. According to official sources, the majority of sick people prefer home-based therapy, indicating a minor disease.
There have been 199 instances recorded in Karnataka, 148 in Kerala, 110 in Maharashtra, 47 in Goa, 36 in Gujarat, 30 in Andhra Pradesh, 26 in Tamil Nadu, 15 in Delhi, 4 in Rajasthan, 2 in Telangana, and one each in Odisha and Haryana.

India on Friday recorded 761 fresh COVID-19 cases and 12 deaths due to the viral disease, according to Union Health Ministry data. The number of active COVID-19 cases in the country came down marginally to 4,334 from 4,423 on Thursday, the data updated at 8 am showed. Kerala has the highest number of active cases at 1,249, followed by Karnataka at 1,240, Maharashtra at 914, Tamil Nadu at 190, and Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh at 128 each. Of the 12 fresh deaths, five were reported from Kerala, four from Karnataka, two from Maharashtra, and one from Uttar Pradesh, the data stated, PTI reported.
Maharashtra Dy CM Ajit Pawar says, "We are taking a daily review of the COVID situation in Maharashtra...All officials of the administration and health department have been instructed to take precautionary measures, we expect people to cooperate like last time because, with the cooperation of everyone, we could control it...The current variant is mild in nature"
Maharashtra on Thursday recorded 171 COVID-19 cases and two deaths, a health department official said. The deaths took place in Solapur and Kolhapur, while Mumbai reported 32 cases, followed by 16 each in Thane city and Navi Mumbai, the health department's bulletin informed. There are 914 active cases in the state, while the tally of those caused by the JN.1 variant stands at 110, it said. Maharashtra's recovery rate is 98.17 per cent, PTI reported.
Mumbai Police's Economic Offences Wing (EOW) registered an FIR for alleged irregularities in civic contracts awarded for setting up jumbo COVID centres in Mulund and Dahisar, an official said on Thursday. A contractor, vendors and unidentified Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials have been booked for alleged fraud to the tune of Rs 37 crore, the official informed. The FIR was registered under sections 406 (criminal breach of trust), 409 (criminal breach of trust by a public servant, banker, merchant, or agent), 420 (cheating), and 120 B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Tardeo police station on Wednesday, he said. The probe was later transferred to EOW, the official added, as reported by PTI.

The nation has been witnessing a rising trend in the reported infections in the last two days with 602 fresh cases recorded on Wednesday, and 760 new cases on Thursday. On Tuesday, India logged 572 fresh cases on Tuesday. Till yesterday (December 4), 220.67 crore doses of Covid vaccines had been administered in India, as per the website of the Health Ministry.
Two people succumbed to the viral disease on Thursday and the active caseload stood at 4,423, said the health ministry, as reported by news agency PTI. One death was reported from Kerala and one was reported from Karnataka.
According to news agency IANS, another death was reported on Thursday when a 63-year-old woman, who had tested positive for Covid, succumbed to the virus during treatment at Lucknow's SGPGIMS. This marked the first Covid-related death among patients in the state this year.

Dr Manoj Agrawal, chief medical officer (CMO) of Lucknow, shared details of the patient’s medical condition, and said, “The patient was suffering from acute kidney injury (stage 3) along with hypertension, diabetes mellitus, morbid obesity, severe sepsis, type-2 respiratory failure, and Covid pneumonia."

IANS reported that as per a new study led by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), patients hospitalised with Omicron BA.5 are more likely to die than those with other Covid-19 variants or with flu. This specific study was published in the Open Forum Infectious Diseases and it looked at the proportion of hospitalised Covid-19 and influenza patients admitted to a US intensive care unit (ICU) in 2021 and 2022.
