Coronavirus Update: Highest Spike of 8380 Cases in 24 Hrs, Death Toll Jumps to 5164

According to the Union Health Ministry India registered its highest single-day spike of COVID-19 cases with 8,380 new infections reported in the last 24 hours, taking the country's tally to 1,82,143, while the death toll rose to 5,164.

New Delhi:  India recorded the highest spike with 8380 new cases in the last 24 hours. The total number of COVID infected cases reach 1,82,143 in the country while 5164 people have lost their lives due to the pandemic. According to the Union Health Ministry, the total number of active cases in the country now stands at 89,995 while the people who have been discharged/ recovered are 86,984. In the last 24 hours, the country has recorded 194 deaths while 4614 people have recovered in a day. The country's recovery rate has also increased to 47.8%, the mortality rate has increased slightly and now stands at 2.8%. Maharashtra continues to be the epicenter of the coronavirus spread where the number of cases has witnessed an even large spike recently. According to the Health Ministry, Maharashtra has the highest number of cases with 65,168 positive cases of infection and 2,197 deaths. Mumbai, the financial capital of the country, has become the hotbed of the coronavirus spread in the state where the number of cases has crossed the 38,000-mark and the death toll has topped the 1,200-mark as well. The total tally for Mumbai stands at 38,442 cases and 1,227 deaths. Following Maharashtra is Tamil Nadu which has recorded 938 new cases in the last 24 hours taking the state tally to 21,184. With a sharp increase in cases since the last few days the national capital, Delhi is third on the list as it has recorded 1163 new cases which take the total number of the state to 18,549. After Delhi comes Gujarat, where the COVID-19 figure stands at 16,356 with 9,232 patients recovered and 1,007 fatalities. Rajasthan has reported 8,617 cases of which 5,739 have recovered and 193 patients are dead. Madhya Pradesh has reported 7,891 positive cases so far of which 4,444 patients have recovered and 343 patients have lost their lives due to the virus. Speaking globally, 61,61,485 people have been infected in the world so far with the USA at the top of the list. The United States of America has reported 18,16,820 cases in total. With the daily surge in numbers, India has also jumped from 10th to 9th position in the list of most infected cases across the globe.
