Punjab records jump in Covid cases

Punjab on Wednesday registered a jump in COVID-19 infections, 107 cases surfacing in the state in the last 24 hours, taking the tally to 5,99,678. With no Covid-related death reported on Wednesday, the toll stood at 16,325, according to the health bulletin. The toll, however, included three deaths, which were not reported earlier. 

The state saw 54, 31 and 74 infections on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday respectively. It registered 118 cases on July 17 and since then, the state has been witnessing less than 100 infections daily.

With the rise in the number of infections, the active cases rose to 517 from 460 Tuesday. With 45 recoveries from the infection, the number of cured persons reached 5,82,836 Wednesday, as per the bulletin.

With no death reported on Wednesday, the toll figure stood at 811. The number of active cases in the city was 35 while the number of cured persons was 61,151.

Maha Govt Allows Hotels, Restaurants To Run Till 10 PM With 50% Capacity

Maharashtra Government allows the operations of hotels and restaurants till 10 pm in the state. Maha health minister Rajesh Tope said that Restaurants/eateries allowed to conduct business till 10 pm from August 15 with with 50 percent capacity. As of now hotels and restaurants were allowed to operate till 4 pm only.  


For malls double dose certificate is compulsory. Marriage halls, offices, shops will also get complete relaxation. 


The minisyer further said that, "moment the need for oxygen per day comes to 700 metric tonnes in the state, then there will be a full lockdown imposed in the third wave. As other states also may need oxygen so it is not clear if we can get from center when we need."

Karnataka has tested the 3rd highest number of COVID-19 samples in country: Minister

Karnataka has tested the third highest number of COVID-19 samples in the country,and has crossed the mark of over 4 Crore tests in the battle against the pandemic. "Karnataka crossed 4 Crore Covid-19 tests marking yet another milestone in the battle against pandemic," Dr K Sudhakar tweeted.

He said, "More than 80 per cent of the tests conducted in the state are RT-PCR tests and Karnataka has tested the third highest number of samples in the entire country." According to the data shared by the Minister, there are 3,338 swab collection centres in the state, 252 COVID-19 testing labs and 81.45 per cent tests are RT-PCR tests.

According to the state health department's COVID-19 bulletin last evening, a total of 4,01,04,915 samples have been tested in the state, of which 1,26,400 were tested on Tuesday alone. Out of over four crore tests till last evening 3,26,68,585 are RT-PCR tests and 74,36,330 are rapid-antigen detection tests.

"Six deaths had occurred at a private hospital in Amritsar right in the beginning when there was an oxygen shortage. That's all. We produced 70 tonnes of oxygen and required 300 tonnes. Now we produce 400 tonnes of oxygen. There's no problem now", Punjab CM Capt Amarinder Singh


Andhra Pradesh was the first state to report "suspected" death due to oxygen shortage during the second wave of COVID-19 after the Centre sought data from them on such fatalities following the raising of the issue in Parliament

Kerala Given 60% More Doses Than Proposed Allocation, Centre Tells HC

The centre is a statement filed before Kerala High Court said that the state had been given adequate Covid-19 vaccine doses. As per the statement, Kerala was allotted 60 percent more dose than the proposed allocation.

Those yet to receive Covid-19 vaccination or unable to take it due to drug allergy or any other ailment, can move out of their houses for essential activities like purchase of food items, including grocery, if there is no one in their household who has been vaccinated or has a negative RT-PCR report, the state government told the Kerala High Court on Wednesday.

 

The Kerala government told Justice P B Suresh Kumar that according to the latest Covid-19 guidelines issued on August 10, people living alone, not vaccinated, and do not have a negative RT-PCR report can move out for essential activities and such persons shall be given priority service by the traders and local self-government institutions. The submission was made in response to a man's plea claiming that not allowing people, who do not have at least one dose of vaccine or a negative RT-PCR test, to go to shops amounted to putting them under house arrest.

Australian state sees worst day with highest new Covid-19 cases
The Australian state of New South Wales (NSW) saw another disastrous day with a record daily high of 356 new local cases and four deaths on Tuesday.

 

What is more concerning is around one third of the new locally acquired cases were in the community while infectious, the Xinhua news agency reported.

 

Among the four deaths, three cases were linked to the current outbreak triggered by Delta variant and one case got infected overseas, NSW Health said.

 

Despite the climbing local transmission, the government is reluctant to further tighten restrictions. NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said she would not take "any strategies that aren't going to work" and is against the idea of imposing a ring of steel around the epicentre areas in southwest Sydney.

Coronavirus LIVE: 75% of UK adults fully vaccinated against Covid

More than three quarters of adults in the UK have now received both doses of a Covid-19 vaccine, the latest British government figures revealed on Tuesday.


A total of 86,780,455 doses have been administered in the UK, with 47,091,889 people receiving a first dose (89%) and 39,688,566 people receiving both doses (75%). Latest data from Public Health England (PHE) and Cambridge University also shows that around 60,000 deaths, 22 million infections and 66,900 hospitalisations have been prevented by the coronavirus vaccines.

New infections in Tamil Nadu were fluctuating over the last few weeks triggering the government to step up the preventive measures which include the screening of passengers from Kerala at entry points; denying entry to devotees at places of worship on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays among others.


Meanwhile, Coimbatore topped the new infections among districts with 224 people contracting the contagion, followed by Chennai (209), Erode (169), Chengalpet (105). Ramanathapuram recorded the least by adding three cases.


A total of 1,50,868 samples were tested in the last 24 hours, pushing the cumulative number of specimens examined to 3,90,02,757 till date, the bulletin said. As many as 30 districts reported new cases in double digits, while there were no fresh deaths in 24 districts

Jammu and Kashmir's COVID-19 tally increased to 3,22,771 on Tuesday with 113 fresh cases while the death toll climbed to 4,392 as two more people succumbed to the disease, officials said. Of the fresh cases, 40 were reported from the Jammu division and 73 from the Kashmir division of the union territory, they said. Srinagar district recorded the highest number of new cases at 38, followed by 10 in Jammu district, the officials said. There are 1,298 active COVID-19 cases in Jammu and Kashmir. So far, 3,17,081 patients have recovered from the disease, they said. There are 37 mucormycosis (black fungus) cases in the union territory. No fresh case has been reported since last evening, they said.

Kerala accounted for more than half of the COVID-19 cases recorded in the country in the last seven days, the Centre said on Tuesday. Singh said the southern state has recorded a high number of reinfections even after two doses of the vaccine being administered and the issue is being probed. 


 Kerala on Tuesday reported 21,119 fresh COVID cases pushing the total infection caseload to 35,86,693, with the test positivity rate in the state rising close to 16 per cent. The number of people who succumbed to the virus rose to 18,004 with 152 more deaths. 


Maharashtra on Tuesday reported 5,609 coronavirus positive cases and 137 fatalities, including the highest 46 in the Pune region, while 7,568 patients recovered, a state health department official said.


With the new additions, the tally of infections and the death toll in Maharashtra rose to 63,63,442 and 1,34,201, respectively, the official said.
