Coronavirus HIGHLIGHTS, Friday, June 18, 2021: With 62,480 new coronavirus infections being reported in a day, India's total tally of COVID-19 cases rose to 2,97,62,793, while the death toll climbed to 3,83,490 with 1,587 fresh fatalities, the lowest in 61 days, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Friday. The active cases have fallen below 8 lakh after 73 days and the national COVID-19 recovery rate has crossed 96 per cent. Over 5,000 children under the age of 14 in Meghalaya have tested Covid-19 positive and 17 of them died, health officials said on Thursday.

Coronavirus HIGHLIGHTS, Friday, June 18, 2021:  Over 5,000 children under the age of 14 in Meghalaya have tested Covid-19 positive and 17 of them died, health officials said on Thursday.

Health officials said that since the beginning of the pandemic last year, 5,101 children up to the age of 14 tested positive but 4,344 of them have recovered and 17 succumbed. The remaining are under treatment in various hospitals. Majority of the children were infected during the past one month.

"As many as 2,950 children have tested positive for Covid-19 since May 15, out of whom 2,821 have recovered, while 13 children died during the same period," an official said. The latest child death was reported in East Garo Hills district where a four-year-old girl succumbed to the dreaded disease earlier this month.

Briefing the media, Health and Family Welfare Minister Alexander Laloo Hek said that not a single newborn baby was affected by infectious disease so far in the state.

With 10,685 patients discharged during the day, recoveries from Covid crossed the 26-lakh mark in Karnataka, while 138 died due to the virus, said the state health bulletin on Thursday.


"Recoveries shot up to 26,10,157, with 10,685 patients discharged across the state in the last 24 hours, while 5,983 positive cases on Wednesday increased Covid tally to 27,90,338, including 1,46,726 active cases," said the bulletin.

As epi-centre of the pandemic in the state, Bengaluru, however, reported only 1,209 fresh cases, taking its Covid tally to 12,01,963, including 78,943 active cases, while recoveries rose to 11,07,648, with 1,510 discharged in the day.

Gautam Buddh Nagar recorded 10 new COVID-19 cases on Friday while Ghaziabad had eight along with one death linked to the coronavirus, official data showed. The death toll reached 461 in Ghaziabad with one more fatality while it stood at 466 in Gautam Buddh Nagar, the data showed.

Don't Overcharge Covid-19 Patients, Maha Deputy CM Warns Hospitals

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Friday said the state government had fixed COVID-19 treatment rates for cities, districts and tehsils and warned hospitals against charging higher than what has been stipulated.

Addressing a press conference here, Pawar said the state government has appointed auditors to verify hospital bills amid the pandemic.

Kerala on Friday reported 11,361 new coronavirus cases and 90 more deaths, taking the caseload to 27,85,304 and the death toll to 11,833. A total of 12,147 persons recuperated from the disease, taking the number of those cured to 26,65,354.
