Congress In ‘Deep Freezer’, Oppn Leaders Looking Up To Mamata To Fight BJP: TMC Mouthpiece

Previously, TMC, in its mouthpiece, had termed Congress as an “incapable and incompetent” party, stating that the Mamata Banerjee-led camp cannot be blamed for Congress leaders jumping ship.

New Delhi: In another direct hit by Trinamool Congress (TMC), the ruling camp in West Bengal on Friday launched a fresh attack on the Congress party stating that it has gone into a “deep freezer” with opposition forces now looking up to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to fill the vacuum.

The remarks were made in an article in TMC’s mouthpiece ‘Jago Bangla’ where it also committed to fight the BJP, news agency PTI reported.

Bringing up poll strategist Prashant Kishor’s latest tweet against Congress, the article stated that not just him, Congress leaders themselves are criticising the party leadership.

“The TMC has been saying this for a long time that the Congress is a spent force. They don’t have the zeal to fight the BJP. The party is so bogged down by infighting that it hardly has time or energy to build an opposition. The UPA does not exist,” the article titled ‘Congress in deep freezer’ read, as quoted by PTI.

“The country currently needs an alternative front and opposition parties have given that responsibility to Mamata Banerjee. They are looking up to her to fill the vacuum. She is presently the most popular opposition face in the country,” it asserted.

This comes after Prashant Kishor, on Thursday, took to Twitter and said that Congress’ leadership is not the “divine right” of an individual, especially when the party has “lost more than 90% elections in last 10 years”, an apparent attack at senior leader Rahul Gandhi.

During her recent visit to Mumbai, CM Mamata Banerjee had also said that “UPA doesn’t exist”.

TMC is trying to expand its footprint nationally and in this bid, it has been up in arms against the grand old party alleging failure to counter BJP.

TMC delivered a massive jolt to the opposition Congress in Meghalaya when 12 of its 17 MLAs led by former chief minister Mukul Sangma jumped ship last week.

In its attempt to make a presence in Tripura, TMC also engaged in a bitter battle with the BJP during the municipal elections. The party is also preparing to contest the assembly elections in Goa to solidify chief Mamata Banerjee’s pitch as the foremost anti-BJP opposition voice.

Previously, the ruling West Bengal party, in its mouthpiece, had termed Congress as an “incapable and incompetent” party, stating that the Mamata Banerjee-led camp cannot be blamed for its leaders jumping ship.

As the ties between Congress and TMC further strained, ‘Jago Bangla’ recently also claimed that party supremo Mamata Banerjee, not former Congress president Rahul Gandhi, has emerged as the face of the opposition against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

What Congress does to thwart TMC’s attempts at occupying a more significant space in national politics - remains to be seen.
