Will Retire From Public Life If...: Congress's Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury On Suspension From Lok Sabha

Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said that there might have been some misunderstanding due to language barrier that led to his suspension from Lok Sabha.

A day after the Lok Sabha revoked his suspension, Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said that he said nothing wrong on the floor of the House. He said that if it is proved otherwise, he would retire from public life.

"I kept my views in the House as per the rules. If I was asked for an explanation in the House I would've provided it. On the other hand, the way derogatory words are used against Congress in the House is on record. Who will think about this? If it can be proven that I used a wrong word in Parliament, I will retire from public life," he said. After the Privilege Committee's meeting on Wednesday, he said as per the rules of the panel, he cannot reveal all the things said during the probe investigation.

He said that there might have been some misunderstanding due to a language barrier. "The context in which I presented my views was well within the rules of the House. There could have been a misunderstanding due to language differences. I sought to know from the privilege committee what should I do if such miscommunication has happened."

On Thursday, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury took a dig at BJP MPs, saying: "I think some BJP leaders, in their zeal to please PM Narendra Modi, adopted an aggressive stance towards me. Everyone saw how they attacked me. Everyone has the right to present their views... But the way the ruling party abused us is on record. They clapped and abused Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. Who will judge the ruling party MPs for such conduct?"

During the Privilege Committee's meeting on August 18, members were of the view that Lok Sabha had already penalized Chowdhury for his behaviour and there was no need for further action by a Parliamentary panel. However, the Committee summoned Chowdhury to give him a chance to present his side of the matter on Wednesday, August 30.
