BJP Led Karnataka Govt Files Revised Affidavit In SC For Deporting Rohingya Muslims

Earlier, the state government had told the top court that it has identified around 72 Rohingya Muslims residing in Bengaluru, and there was no intention of taking coercive action against them.

New Delhi: After BJP led Karnataka Government had told the Supreme Court that it has no intention of deporting or taking any strict actions against the Rohingya Muslims, the state government has filed a revised affidavit in the apex court regarding the deportation of the Rohingya Muslims, reported ANI.

In response to the petition filed by a lawyer and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay on October 26, the state government has filed its second affidavit. In the petition, Ashwini Kumar seeks the directive from the apex court to identify and detain the "illegal immigrants" from the state including Rohingya Muslims within a year.

Earlier, the state government had told the top court that it has identified around 72 Rohingya Muslims residing in Bengaluru, and there was no intention of taking coercive action against them.

However, under the new affidavit filed by KN Vanaja, the state government has identified as many as 126 Rohingyas not living in any camps or detention centres across the state. “This Respondent undertakes that whatever the order that would be passed by this court will be scrupulously adhered to and followed in its letter and spirit," the affidavit was quoted by HT in its report.

Previously in 2017, the state government had sought the apex court to dismiss the petition filed by the advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay regarding deporting illegal Rohingya Muslims living in the state. Ashwini Kumar in his petition in 2017 further sought the top court to announce the preparation of fake identity cards such as PAN cards, ADHAAR cards, etch as a non-bailable, non-compoundable offence. However, unlike past, the state government has left the final decision in the hands of the Supreme Court.
