Terming the day of Ayodhya Ram temple's consecration ceremony as a "national festival", Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered the closure of all liquor shops in the state on January 22, 2024. Additional Excise Commissioner (Administration) Gyaneshwar Tripathi said, "On January 22, there will be a consecration ceremony in the Ram temple in Ayodhya. It has been decided to close all the liquor shops on this day," reported news agency PTI.
On this auspicious day, the UP Government has already declared a holiday for all educational institutions in the state.

In an order, the Delhi Excise department declared six 'dry days' in the national capital prohibiting the sale of alcohol on Republic Day (January 26), Guru Ravidas Jayanti on February 24, Swami Dayanand Saraswati Jayanti on March 6, Maha Shivaratri on March 8, Holi on March 25, and Good Friday on March 29.
Following this, a number of BJP officials, notably Delhi Assembly Leader of Opposition Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, have insisted that January 22, the day of the Ayodhya Ram temple's consecration ceremony, be designated as a dry day. But, no decision has been taken by the government in this regard, officials said, reported PTI.
Jharkhand BJP MP Deepak Prakash wrote to CM Hemant Soren and demanded that the sale of liquor and meat be banned in the state on January 22, news agency ANI reported.
According to WION's report, The governments of Chhattisgarh and Assam have also decided to mark January 22 as a dry day. All India Jamiatul Quresh – a Muslim organisation – announced that all the meat shops will remain close in Lucknow on this day.
“We all are Awadh residents. Keeping in mind the goodwill on the 'Pran Pratishtha' in Ayodhya, it has been decided unanimously that on January 22, 2024, all the meat traders of Bilochpura, Sadar Cantt, Fatehganj, and Latouche Road areas will keep their businesses closed," said Shahabuddin Qureshi, national secretary of All India Jamiatul Quresh, as quoted by the report.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, UP CM Yogi Adityanath, and other VIPs will be attending the ceremony in Ayodhya. PM Modi will address the country on the occasion.
