Supreme Court's Rationale And Opposition's Response
While the Supreme Court imposed several bail conditions on Kejriwal, including the submission of bail bonds totalling Rs 50,000, it dismissed arguments presented by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) counsel suggesting that interim bail for electoral campaigning would confer undue privilege upon politicians.
In its ruling, the bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta emphasized that Kejriwal's interim bail did not signify a special status for politicians. The court underscored Kejriwal's lack of criminal antecedents and affirmed that he posed no threat to society.
Opposition leaders welcomed the court's decision, expressing optimism about the bolstered vigour in the "fight to save democracy." Congress leader Pawan Khera extended hopes for justice to other political figures, while Mamata Banerjee of the Trinamool Congress and Sharad Pawar of the NCP (SP) lauded the decision as a victory for democratic values.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders Priyanka Chaturvedi and Aaditya Thackeray hailed the interim bail as a significant triumph for Kejriwal against what they characterized as a "dictatorial regime."
