Arindam Bagchi, a member of the 1995 batch of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), has been appointed as the next Ambassador/Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva. Bagchi currently serves as the Additional Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
"Arindam Bagchi (IFS:1995), presently Additional Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, has been appointed as the next Ambassador/Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations and other International Organisations in Geneva. He is expected to take up the assignment shortly," a statement by the MEA informed.

Notably, Arindam Bagchi held the crucial position of the Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson since March 2021, during which he played a pivotal role in representing India's foreign policy and engaging with the global media. His tenure as spokesperson was marked by several critical events, including India's response to the Covid-19 pandemic and the tense standoff with China on the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
In Geneva, Bagchi will take over from Indra Mani Pandey, who is expected to return to New Delhi, PTI reported.
He has previously served as India's ambassador to Croatia and as the deputy high commissioner to Sri Lanka. Additionally, he has had significant stints in the Prime Minister's Office as a director and at India's permanent mission to the UN in New York.
As Bagchi assumes his responsibilities in Geneva, the MEA is also considering several senior diplomats, including joint secretary (G20) Nagaraj Naidu Kakanur and high commissioner to Mauritius K Nandini Singla, for the role of MEA spokesperson, PTI reported.
