ED Summons Jharkhand Minister Alamgir Alam For Questioning After Massive Cash Seizure

The ED had arrested Alamgir's personal secretary Sanjiv Lal and his domestic help on Tuesday after they recovered over Rs 32 crore 'unaccounted cash' from them.

The Enforcement Directorate on Sunday issued a summon to Jharkhand Minister Alamgir Alam to appear before the agency on Tuesday in connection with the recovery of huge cash from the household help of his personal secretary.

The probe agency had arrested Alamgir's personal secretary Sanjiv Lal and his domestic help on Tuesday after they recovered over Rs 35 crore 'unaccounted cash' from them.

70-year-old Alam has been asked to depose at the zonal office of the ED in Ranchi on Tuesday for recording his statement under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), PTI said quoting sources.

Earlier this week, ED raided the apartment of Jahangir Alam, who is the house help of Alamgir Alam’s personal secretary Sanjeev Lal, and recovered over Rs 35 crore in cash.

The ED had informed a special PMLA court in Ranchi, while seeking the remand of the two arrested persons, that Sanjeev Lal collected commission on behalf of some influential people and government officials from top to bottom in the rural department are involved in the alleged illegal cash payments nexus. 

Alamgir Alam, the four-term MLA from the Pakur constituency of Jharkhand is a leader of the Congress Legislative Party and is currently serving as the Rural Development Minister of the state. 

In the video footage of the raid, ED officials were seen loading large trunks containing the recovered cash onto vehicles. The ED team collected it from the home of Sanjeev Lal's household help. The seized cash is estimated to be around Rs 35.23 crore. 

The cash haul was part of raids at multiple locations in Ranchi by the probe agency that began this Monday morning.
