After Many Cancelled Shows, Munawar Faruqui Announces New Show In Kolkata

Faruqui had spent around a month in jail earlier this year after a BJP MLA’s son had registered a complaint against him for a joke which allegedly hurt religious sentiments.

New Delhi: After a few days of bidding farewell to stand-up comedy, Munawar Faruqui is back with his next show scheduled in Kolkata next month. Faruqui took to Twitter to announce that he will be performing his show called ‘Dhandho’ on January 16 in Kolkata. He also added the link to the website Bookmyshow for getting tickets to his show.

According to PTI, the tickets on Bookmyshow were “filling fast” and were priced at Rs 799. Faruqui had tweeted last month that he was bidding goodbye to comedy after his show was cancelled by the Bengaluru police amid protest by the Hindu right-wing groups who alleged that his jokes had hurt Hindu sentiments.

Earlier, 12 of his shows were cancelled amid threats of vandalism to the venue. Faruqui had spent around a month in jail earlier this year after a BJP MLA’s son had registered a complaint against him for a joke which allegedly hurt religious sentiments.

After his latest show was denied permission by Bengaluru police in November, Faruqui had written on Twitter, “My name is Munawar Faruqui. And that's been my time, you guys were (a) wonderful audience. Good bye, I'm done.

Faruqui had said that the money raised from the Bengaluru show was supposed to be donated to late actor Puneeth Rajkumar’s charitable organisation. Around 600 tickets for the show were already sold.

A few days after Faruqui’s show, comedian Kunal Kamra also said that his shows scheduled to be held in Bengaluru were cancelled after organisers received threats. Kamra is a strong critic of the establishment.
