3 cops suspended for misbehaving with couple during ‘anti-Romeo’ drive
NEW DELHI: After Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed officials to ensure no "unnecessary harassment" during the 'anti-Romeo drive, three policemen were suspended for detaining and misbehaving with a young couple in Ghaziabad.
In an incident that earned widespread condemnation, the couple was taken to a police station without the presence any women police personnel. The action was taken after a video of policemen misbehaving with the couple during 'anti-romeo' drive went viral on social media.
The Chief Minister has asked the Principal Secretary (Home) to chalk out clear guidelines for anti-Romeo squads and ensure there is no unnecessary harassment of boys and girls moving around or sitting at any place.
Earlier, the UP Police has also warned of strict action against personnel found guilty of troublitg anyone in the name of curbing eve-teasing.
"In case a claim of harassment is found to be true, strict action will be taken against anti-Romeo squads. There is a departmental way of taking action," Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Daljeet Chaudhary had said.
Anti-Romeo squads, a poll promise of the BJP that won a remarkable victory in the Uttar Pradesh election, drew criticism from certain quarters are visuals of policemen targeting young boys and girls going viral on TV and in social media.
