New Delhi: Facebook India's public policy director Shivnath Thukral and legal director G V Anand Bhushan will depose before the Delhi Assembly's Peace and Harmony Committee on November 18, 2021, regarding the 2020 northeast Delhi riots, according to an official statement issued on Tuesday.

According to the committee, the summons was issued to Facebook India to express its views on the essential role of social media in preventing the spread of false, inflammatory, and malicious communications that might instigate violence and strife.

The committee, led by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Raghav Chadha, will hold its meeting in Delhi Vidhan Sabha on November 18 at 12.30 p.m, PTI reports.

The committee has heard seven witnesses so far as part of its investigation into the role of social media in the February 2020 riots in northeast Delhi, which claimed over 50 lives and wounded hundreds more.

The committee's hearings will be aired live in the interest of openness, according to the statement.

In July this year, the top court had recognised that the privileges and power of the Delhi Legislative Assembly's Committee are at par with Parliamentary privileges and those of other Legislative Assemblies.

Communal clashes had broken out in northeast Delhi in February 2020, after violence between the Citizenship (Amendment) Act supporters and its protesters spiraled out of control leaving at least 53 people dead and over 700 injured.
