Hyundai Will Offer BS6 Diesel Cars Even After April 2020
Although the cost of diesel cars are set to go up from next year, Hyundai will continue to offer diesel engines on their cars post the implementation of BS6 norms
India’s largest exporter of cars, Hyundai, has revealed that it will continue to sell diesel cars even after the implementation of BS6 norms next year. This move is the polar opposite of what Maruti Suzuki intends to do once the new norms come into play. However, Maruti Suzuki has said that it might reconsider the decision if there is a considerable demand for diesel cars in the future. Other manufacturers who have gone the Hyundai way are Honda and Ford.
Upgrading smaller diesel cars to comply with the new norms is likely to make them more expensive by around Rs 1 lakh. This could lead to diesel cars losing their edge over their petrol counterparts, even for those who cover a lot of distance every day.
Taking into account the above mentioned costs, the price between the E variant of the petrol Venue and the E variant of the diesel Venue would increase from Rs 1.25 lakh to Rs 2.05 lakh.
However, Hyundai also offers the Venue with a 1.0-litre turbocharged direct injection petrol engine which is more expensive than the naturally-aspirated 1.2-litre petrol variant. The 1.0-litre S variant of the Venue is Rs 24,000 more expensive than the same variant with a diesel engine. Once BS6 norms come into play, this difference will increase to around Rs 1 lakh. In such a scenario, diesel cars will be able to justify their costs, compared to petrol cars.
Kia Motor, a sister-company of Hyundai, will equip its upcoming SUV with a 1.5-litre diesel engine. Going forward, this could be the only diesel engine used by Hyundai and Kia for their smaller cars.
