Honda Activa 5G vs TVS Jupiter vs TVS Wego vs Honda Dio vs Honda Cliq - Real World City Mileage Compared

Today, scooters have a strong hold on the mass market commuter segment, especially in Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities. In a cost-conscious market like ours, fuel efficiency, among other practical aspects, often becomes a deal breaker for many. As a result, manufacturers too are introducing tech to push the envelope when it comes to fuel efficiency. But, more often than not, the mileage numbers claimed by manufacturers are way off from what you get in the real world. So, we decided to put a bunch of 110cc scooters to the test to find out how much efficiency do they actually deliver per litre of fuel.

TVS Wego

Ever since it was launched back in 2010, the TVS Wego has been receiving minor updates to keep it fresh and relevant. Features include a digital instrument cluster, TVS’ SYNC braking system (drum brake variant), front disc brake and telescopic front forks. After the makeover, the Wego has become a more attractive proposition for 110cc scooter buyers, especially among the youth and women. Powering the Wego is a 109.7cc, air-cooled engine, which delivers 8PS at 7500rpm and a peak torque of 8.4Nm at 5500rpm. Our road test reveals that the Wego returns 52.8kmpl in the city, thus lagging way behind in this comparo. However, the manufacturer has provided a ‘Power and Eco’ mode to keep throttle modulation in check which in turn affects the mileage.

City: 52.8kmpl

ARAI claimed: 62kmpl

STD  Rs 50,165 (ex-showroom Delhi)

Disc Rs 53,083 (ex-showroom Delhi)

Honda Dio

Honda’s version of a moto-scooter and also the third best-selling scooter in India recently received a facelift to keep up with the competition. The Honda Dio now features new body graphics, LED headlamp and a digital instrument console (only in the DLX version). The Dio has been the go-to choice for youngsters, mainly because of its sharp and attractive styling. Powered by the same 109.19cc engine that powers the Honda Activa, the Honda Dio produces 7.92PS at @ 7000rpm and 8.91 Nm of torque at 5500 rpm. The Honda Dio does away with the metal body of the Activa though and uses lighter components instead, which makes it one of the lightest two-wheeler in our comparison, weighing in at 104kg. In our tests, the BS-IV compliant Honda Dio returned 55kmpl in city traffic conditions.

City: 55kmpl

ARAI claimed: 60kmpl

STD  Rs 50,296 (ex-showroom Delhi)

DLX  Rs 53,292 (ex-showroom Delhi)

Honda Activa 5G

The Honda Activa still remains the undisputed king with regards to scooter sales in India. To further strengthen its hold in the market, Honda introduced the Activa 5G, which features an LED headlight, a new digital-analogue speedometer (DLX variant) and two new colours to help it stand apart from the Activa 4G. Power still comes from the same 109.19cc single-cylinder, air-cooled engine, which produces 8PS of power at 7500rpm and 9Nm of torque at 5500rpm, mated to a CVT transmission. The Activa 5G loses out to its main rival, the TVS Jupiter, when it comes to fuel efficiency, but returns an almost identical figure as its sibling, the Honda Cliq.

City: 58.1kmpl

ARAI claimed: 60kmpl

STD  Rs 52,443 (ex-showroom Delhi)

DLX  Rs 54,884 (ex-showroom Delhi)

Honda CliQ

The Honda CliQ’s quirky design may not appeal to everyone, and it doesn’t necessarily need to, as it’s designed for utility and is targeted at rural buyers. The CliQ is a peppy little scooter that gets the same 109.19cc engine as the Dio and the Activa. It produces similar power and torque numbers here as well - 8.1PS @ 7000rpm and 8.94 Nm @ 5500rpm. At 102kg, the CliQ is the lightest of the lot and is the second most fuel efficient scooter in this comparison, returning 58.4kmpl in the city.

City: 58.4kmpl

ARAI claimed: 60kmpl

STD  Rs 43,955 (ex-showroom Delhi)

DLX  Rs 44,457 (ex-showroom Delhi)

TVS Jupiter

TVS Jupiter registered a sale of 8,10,916 units in FY2018 and is the second best-selling scooter in the country. To take on its arch-rival, the Honda Activa, TVS has loaded its scooter with a slew of features like USB port, external fuel filler, eco-meter, an LED tail lamp, front disc brake, 12-inch alloy wheels and telescopic front forks. It’s powered by a 109.7cc, single-cylinder, air-cooled motor, which produces 8PS of power and a peak torque of 8Nm at 5500rpm. The TVS Jupiter might not beat its arch-rival in terms of sales, but it does win the title of the most fuel efficient scooter in the segment, returning 60.44kmpl.

City: 60.44Kmpl

ARAI claimed: 62kmpl
