Zoom Apologizes For Security Issues, Announces A 90-Day Feature Freeze To Fix Concerns

Video conferencing app Zoom recently ran into trouble as several reports began to highlight the privacy and security issues of the platform. Now, the company has come forward to apologize for the safety issues that users were facing. It has also announced a series of measures to resolve them.

Video conferencing app Zoom has been in the news due to its growing popularity as millions of people across the world, use this app to communicate amid the Covid-19 lockdown. The app, however, recently ran into trouble as several reports began to highlight the privacy and security issues of the platform. Now, the company has come forward to apologize for the safety issues that users were facing. It has also announced a 90-day feature freeze among a series of measures to mitigate and resolve security concerns. Zoom founder and CEO Eric S Yuan explained that the app was primarily designed for enterprises with full IT support. “For the past several weeks, supporting this influx of users has been a tremendous undertaking and our sole focus...we recognize that we have fallen short of the community’s – and our own – privacy and security expectations. For that, I am deeply sorry, and I want to share what we are doing about it,” he wrote. Apart from apologizing, Yuan has announced a feature freeze for the coming 90 days. During this, instead of working on new features & updates, the company will shift “engineering resources to focus on our biggest trust, safety, and privacy issues.” Additionally, Zoom will undertake several measures such as conduct a comprehensive review with third-party experts and prepare a transparency report.  From next week, the Zoom CEO will also be hosting a weekly webinar to “provide privacy and security updates to our community.” The steps aim to instill confidence among 200 million daily users who use the app for working, studying and socializing from home.
