Coronavirus HIGHLIGHTS, Wednesday, June 9, 2021: India continues to observe a declining trend in the daily number of fresh Covid-19 cases and fatalities related to the deadly disease. In order to curb the impact of novel Coronavirus, Centre has ramped up vaccination drive, and placed orders for 44 crore doses of Covishield and Covaxin. Meanwhile, Pfizer said that it will start a large study to test its coronavirus vaccine in children below 12 and selected a dosing regime for the trial.
COVID-19 death toll in Bihar was on Wednesday revised drastically upwards by the state health department which put the total number of fatalities caused by the pandemic at 9,429.
According to the department, which had till the previous day stated the number of deaths to be under 5,500, as many as 3,951 deaths have been added to the toll after verification.
Rajasthan reports 520 new Covid-19 cases, 2282 recoveries and 30 deaths in the last 24 hours.

Nearly 2,000 passengers on Wednesday took a ride on the Noida-Greater Noida metro which resumed service after a hiatus of over a month due to COVID-19 curbs, officials said.
The total ridership on the Noida-Greater Noida Metro stood at 1,992 on Wednesday, a Noida Metro Rail Corporation (NMRC) official said.
West Bengal on Wednesday reported 5,384 new COVID cases, 10,512 recoveries, and 95 deaths in the past 24 hours.

The Nagaland government on Wednesday announced an extension of the ongoing Covid-related lockdown till June 18 with easing of some restrictions.
The decision was taken by the states High Powered Committee on COVID-19 at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio two days before the current lockdown was to end, state minister Neiba Kronu said.
Three members of a gang have been arrested from Bihar for allegedly duping several people on the pretext of providing them oxygen cylinders for coronavirus-affected patients, police said on Wednesday.
All the three accused operated from their native place in Bihar's Nalanda district. They took money on the pretext of supplying oxygen cylinders but never delivered them.
People more concerned about catching Covid-19 were more disapproving of the wrong-doings of others, whatever they were doing wrong, according to a study on how we make moral judgements.
The findings are evidence that our morality is shaped by various emotions and intuitions, of which concerns about health and safety are prominent. This means that our judgements of wrongdoing are not completely rational, said researchers from the University of Cambridge in the UK.
The study, published in the journal Evolutionary Psychology, did not focus on behaviours relating to the pandemic itself -- such as social distancing -- but considered a wide range of moral transgressions.
Between March and May 2020, over 900 study participants in the US were presented with a series of scenarios -- on harm, fairness, in-group loyalty, deference to authority, and purity -- and asked to rate them on a scale from 'not at all wrong' to 'extremely wrong'.
Having witnessed shortage of oxygen for Covid patients in and outside hospitals, during (mid-April to mid-May) the period when Delhi was registering over 20,000 new Coronavirus cases per day, the Delhi Government has planned to install 57 oxygen plants in the city.
As per the Delhi government, out of the total oxygen plants to be installed in the city, eight would be pressure swing absorption (PSA) plants which have been approved by the Centre. It is part of the preparation of a possible third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Goa government on Wednesday announced that it will host "Tika Utsav 3.0", a vaccination festival across the state to inoculate maximum population in the age group of 18 to 44 years against COVID-19.
Speaking to reporters after chairing a state Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said, Through Tika Utsav 3.0, we will be able to vaccinate everyone in the 18-44 age category in the state. We have witnessed a good response to the Tika Utsavs that were held in the past."
The state government has held two "Tika Utsavs" in the past involving all panchayats and municipal councils.

Industry chamber PHDCCI on Wednesday suggested the government a five-pronged strategy including immediate imposition of lockdown in a district, where the number of active cases are more than 500, to stop the possibility of a third wave of coronavirus in the country.
Its suggestions include a target to vaccinate at least half of the population in the next 3-4 months, ensure adoption of strict rules such as wearing masks, maintaining social distancing, among others, and adopting strict norms and compliances for micro-containment zones.
Vaccination in Tamil Nadu has come to a grinding halt as several districts have fallen short of the required doses in the state. 39 out of the 45 health units of the state reported a shortage of vaccines.
The state is expecting 63,370 doses of Covaxin on Wednesday and another 40,000 doses on Thursday. A quantity of 3.6 lakh doses of Covishield vaccine is to be received by the state on Friday and health experts feel only after these arrivals would things get back on track.
Tamil Nadu has so far received 1.01 crore doses under the state and central quota and 97.5 lakh doses have been administered. Three lakh doses of vaccines were wasted since January 2021, according to the health department.
The Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh has cancelled the Uttar Pradesh Madrasa Education Council Class 10 and 12 board examinations for session 2020-2021, keeping in view the "extraordinary situation arising due to the Covid pandemic".
An official release said that students from Classes 1 to 9 and 11 will be promoted to the next class without taking examinations.
The release said, "In view of the extraordinary circumstances arising due to Covid, class 10 and class 12 board examinations for the academic session 2020-21 in Uttar Pradesh Madrasa Education Council-recognized and state-aided madrasas have been cancelled. Also, a decision has been taken to promote the students from class 1 to class 8, class 9 and class 11 to the next class."
Mizoram on Wednesday reported 203 new COVID-19 cases, pushing the state's tally to 14,196, an official said. At least 3,214 samples were tested in the last 24 hours, taking the positivity rate to 6.31 per cent, he said.
Of the fresh cases, Aizawl district reported the highest 158 infections, followed by Lunglei district at 24 and Kolasib district at 11, he said. Fifty-two children were among the newly-infected people, the official said.
At present, Mizoram has 3,370 active cases, while 10,769 people have recovered. The death toll in the state remains at 57

DRDO-developed Covid-19 drug 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) would be priced at a steep Rs 990 per sachet. The drug was developed by scientists at Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (INMAS), a Defence Research & Defence Organisation lab, and is being commercialised by pharma major Dr Reddy’s Laboratories.
According to news agency Reuters, American pharma giant, Pfizer is likely to begin a large study to test its coronavirus vaccine in children below 12 and selected a dosing regime for the trial. The American pharmaceutical company reportedly claimed that the study will enroll as many as 4,500 children at over 90 clinical sites in the US, Finland, Poland and Spain.
