Meghalaya CM Likely To Meet Governor To Stake Claim To Form Govt

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma is likely to meet with state Governor Phagu Chauhan on Friday morning to claim the right to form the next government, said officials on Thursday.

According to the official, Sangma, who is also the president of the ruling NPP, will meet the governor on Friday at 11:30 a.m. to inform him of the results of the assembly election.

"The MLAs of NPP and other allies will also accompany him. They will stake claim to form the next government." Sangma will give a speech at a press conference prior to meeting the Governor.

On Thursday, the National People's Party (NPP) won 26 of the 59 constituencies that went to the polls on February 27 and became the state's largest party.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that Sangma sought the support of Union Home Minister Amit Shah in forming the new government as the party fell short of the magic number of 31 in the 60-member assembly.
