SC Reopens After Winter Break On Monday, To Launch Project Allowing Free Digital Access To Its Reports:

The Supreme Court will launch a project on Monday that will allow free access to official law reports of its judgements to law students, lawyers, and the general public in another move toward digitalization of the court.

The Electronic Supreme Court Reports (e-SCR) project will be launched under the order of Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud as an initiative to give a digital version of the highest court's decisions in the way in which they are recorded in the official law report - 'Supreme Court Reports'.

A team of officials from the Judges' Library and the Editorial Section worked tirelessly for 15 days to construct a database sufficient for meeting the needs of the search engine developed by the Supreme Court in collaboration with the NIC, Pune.

The e-SCR initiative will be launched on the Supreme Court's website, as well as on the Supreme Court of India's mobile application and the National Judicial Data Grid's Judgment webpage (NJDG).

The Supreme Court will resume on Monday following its winter break.

Supreme Court To Pronounce Verdict On Pleas Against Demonetisation:

The Supreme Court is set to rule on a slew of petitions contesting the government's 2016 move to demonetize currency notes in denominations of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 on Monday.

A five-judge Constitution bench led by Justice S A Nazeer, who will retire on January 4, is expected to rule on the case on January 2, when the Supreme Court returns from its winter recess.

According to the highest court's subject list, there will be two separate judgements in the matter, pronounced by Justices B R Gavai and B V Nagarathna. It is unclear whether the two decisions will concur or disagree.

The RBI previously admitted in its arguments that there were "temporary hardships," which are an inevitable part of the nation-building process, but there was a framework in place to address any issues that developed.

The Centre recently told the Supreme Court in an affidavit that demonetisation was a "well-considered" decision that was part of a bigger strategy to address the issue of fake money, terror financing, black money, and tax evasion.

The Supreme Court has considered 58 petitions contesting the Centre's November 8, 2016 demonetisation announcement.
