"We're in the last week of 2021. 2022 is set to arrive. We need to be cautious during the festive period. Infections are rising across several nations due to a new variant of COVID, Omicron. In India, there have been a few cases as well. I call upon all of you to not panic," PM Modi said.
"Today, the nation has 18 lakh isolation beds, 5 lakh oxygen supported beds, 1.4 lakh ICU beds and 90,000 special beds for kids. Today, we have over 3,000 functional PSA Oxygen plants and 4 lakh cylinders have been provided to all states," PM Modi said in his address to nation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation shortly.
Delhi on Saturday recorded 249 fresh Covid cases, the highest single-day rise since June 13, and one death while the positivity rate mounted to 0.43 per cent, according to data shared by the city health department.
Meanwhile, Mumbai has reported 757 new cases, 280 recoveries and no deaths, in the last 24 hours. Active cases in financial capital stands at 3,703.
Amid the ongoing Omicron surge in Karnataka, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said that a decision on imposing night curfew in the state will be made on Sunday in a meeting with experts.
"I will discuss with all the important people and will decide the next course of action keeping in view the present situation," he was quoted as saying by new agency PTI.

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on Saturday paid tributes to former prime minister and BJP veteran Atal Bihari Vajpayee on his birth anniversary, describing him as the "man of the masses".
Born in Gwalior in 1924, Vajpayee was the face of the BJP for decades.
"One of the tallest Indian leaders, Atalji was an eminent parliamentarian, able administrator, prolific writer, mesmerising orator and above all, a great human being," the Vice President Secretariat tweeted, quoting Naidu.
Vajpayee, the vice president said, brought systemic changes in governance to improve the lives of the people. He will always be remembered for strengthening democracy and ushering in a connectivity revolution in the country, Naidu added.
Vajpayee's birth anniversary is also observed as 'Good Governance Day' since 2014.
In view of the spike in coronavirus cases and the growing threat of the Omicron variant, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has banned New Year celebration programmes and gatherings in any closed or open areas in the city.
Mumbai municipal commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal issued an order to this effect late Friday evening.
"There shall be no gathering or celebration of New Year in any closed or open areas under the BMC jurisdiction," the order said.
The order came into effect from the midnight of December 25 and shall remain in force till the next directive.
The order is applicable to all hotels, bars, restaurants as well as to privately-owned places that could be used for such gatherings and celebrations, it said.
On Friday, Maharashtra government also prohibited gathering of more than five persons in public places between 9 pm and 6 am. The state recorded 1,410 coronavirus cases and 20 Omicron infections during the day.

A nocturnal Gunfight started between militants and government forces in Chowgam area of South Kashmir's Shopian district on Saturday.
Reports said that a joint team of Police and Army’s 44RR launched a cordon and search operation in Chowgam.
As the joint team of forces approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon the forces, triggering off a gunfight.
A senior police officer also confirmed about exchange of firing between militants and security forces.

Punjab on Friday reported 41 fresh cases of coronavirus, taking the infection tally to 6,04,133, according to a health bulletin.
With no COVID-related death reported in the state, the toll remained unchanged at 16,636.
Among the fresh cases, Jalandhar reported 17 cases, followed by five each in Pathankot and Patiala.
The number of active cases rose to 335 from 314 on Thursday.
Twenty more people recovered from the infection, taking the number of those who have been cured to 5,87,162, the bulletin stated.
Meanwhile, the Union Territory of Chandigarh reported 12 COVID-19 cases, taking the total count to 65,754.

An encounter broke out between security forces and militants in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, police said.
The security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Chowgam area of Shopian in south Kashmir, following inputs about the presence of militants there, a police official said.
He said the search operation turned into an encounter after the hiding militants fired upon a search party of the security forces, which retaliated.
The exchange of firing was going on when last reports came in, the official said, adding that further details were awaited.

Eight more cases of Omicron variant of coronavirus were detected in Kerala on Friday, taking the total number of infected people to 37, Health Minister Veena George said.
One person each from Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam, two each from Alappuzha, Ernakulam and Thrissur districts have been detected with the new variant of the virus.
Meanwhile, the first Omicron positive patient aged 39 has been discharged from hospital.
The Health department said a 48-year-old foreigner who reached Thiruvananthapuram from Russia, a Kollam native (40) who reached Ernakulam from Namibia, an Alappuzha native (28) who reached Ernakulam from Qatar were among those who were found infected with the new variant.
