Lakhimpur Kheri violence: Navjot Singh Sidhu released from Sarangpur police station

Chandigarh: Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu was released from Sarangpur Police Station on Monday hours after he was detained by the police while protesting outside Punjab Raj Bhavan for demanding the arrest of Union Minister of State's son Ashish Mishra over Lakhimpur Kheri incident.

"Is demanding the arrest of those who killed farmers a crime?," says Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu who was earlier detained for leading a protest in Chandigarh against the death of 8 persons, including 4 farmers in UP's Lakhimpur Kheri violence.

Punjab Deputy CM Sukhjinder Randhawa & Congress leader Kuljit Nagra along with other party leaders have been detained by UP police in Saharanpur, while they were on their way to Lakhimpur Kheri to meet families of farmers who lost their lives in violence. Sidhu, staged a massive protest before Raj Bhawan today while strongly condemning the killing of innocent farmers in Lakhimpur Kheri "at the hands of BJP goons and ministers".

"People who ran vehicles on peaceful protesting farmers (in Lakhimpur) should be arrested. A case of sedition should be registered against Haryana CM ML Khattar for his statement," said Sidhu during a protest in Chandigarh. Sidhu slammed the BJP for the atrocities committed by the Uttar Pradesh police against the Congress national leader Priyanka Gandhi who reached to support the farmers.

The Congress has demanded immediate release of party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra who has been allegedly detained by Uttar Pradesh Police in the Hargaon area on her way to Lakhimpur Kheri. Chandigarh police with its heavy task force arrested Sidhu along with his associates. On Sidhu's call Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee today staged protests at block and district level across Punjab.

While protesting, Sidhu demanded strict action against the alleged 'killers of farmers' and the removal of the Union Minister of State of Ministry of Home Affairs Ajay Mishra behind the attack. He also demanded that a case of sedition should be registered against Haryana Chief Minister ML Khattar for making incendiary and provocative speeches against farmers.

Navjot Singh Sidhu today held a protest outside the Governor's House. He was accompanied by more than a dozen INC MLAs, Punjab Youth Congress President and other Congress workers. Sidhu staged the protest in front of the main gate and raised slogans against the Central government. The Chandigarh police reached the spot with its large task force and then called in water cannons. After nearly an hour, the Punjab Congress President was arrested along with his associates, The statement of Punjab Congress stated.

Sidhu said that farmers were being forced to sacrifice their lives due to the adamant attitude of the Central government.

"If the government is serious about the welfare of farmers, it should immediately repeal the three agriculture laws and give legal recognition to the desired minimum support price (MSP) on crops," he said. Sidhu, who has been supporting the farmers' movement, said that the BJP is spoiling the atmosphere of the country by oppressing the food-givers of the country.

As many as eight people were killed on Sunday in Lakhimpur Kheri following violence that broke out after a car hit protesting farmers.

Samyukta Kisan Morcha, an umbrella body of several farmer unions, issued a statement on Sunday regarding the incident claiming the death of four farmers and alleged that one of the four farmers was shot dead by Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra Teni's son--Ashish Mishra, while the others have been allegedly run over by the vehicles of his convoy.

However, both the Union Minister and his son have refuted SKM's allegations.

Mumbai airport to reopen domestic passenger terminal T1 from Oct 20

Mumbai, Oct 4 (PTI) The city's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) on Monday announced the reopening of its domestic passenger terminal T1 from the midnight of October 20.

GoFirst, AirAsia India, Star Air and TruJet will resume all their domestic operations from Terminal 1 from October 20 midnight, the private airport operator said in a release.

However, IndiGo's select flights will resume from October 31 with most of its flights operating from T2 and base flights will operate out of Terminal 1, it added.

The Mumbai airport authorities had suspended flight services from T1 in mid-April after the deadly second wave of the pandemic hit the country and moved all operations to T2, which is largely used for international connectivity.

With the nationwide vaccination drive and increase in passenger confidence in air travel, the CSMIA is re-opening its Terminal 1 for domestic flight operations, starting October 20, the private airport operator said in a statement.

Terminal 1 will cater to approximately 156 flights daily, while approximately 396 flights will be operated from Terminal 2, it said.

During the first wave of the pandemic also, services from T1 remained suspended for nearly seven months. At that time too, all operations were being conducted from T2.

The resumption of services via T1 from October 20 will help maintain social distancing measures, uphold passenger safety, and ensure a seamless transit, the CSMIA said in the statement.

It also said that all modes of transport to and from the airport will be made available for the convenience of the passengers, as before.

CSMIA's T1 will host 12 registration desks and 12 testing booths across arrivals and departures where passengers can opt to undergo the RT-PCR test at the airport, the statement said.

ngress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu again demanded a replacement of Punjab's police chief and advocate general on Sunday, saying otherwise the ruling party in the state will suffer a loss of face. Hours later, Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi reminded that the names of 10 police officers have already been sent to the Centre.

He asserted that a "good" officer will be appointed as the director general of police (DGP) after consulting Sidhu, ministers and MLAs once the state government receives three shortlisted names from the Centre. "Demand for Justice in Sacrilege cases and for arrest of main culprits behind the drug trade brought our Govt in 2017 & Due to his failure, People removed the last CM. Now, AG/DG appointments rub salt on wounds of victims, they must be replaced or we will have No face!!," Sidhu said in a tweet.

The development comes three days after Sidhu and Channi held a meeting, following which it was decided to set up a coordination panel for prior consultation on all major decisions of the state government. Talking to reporters in Morinda on the sidelines of a government function, Channi said a regular DGP is yet to be appointed when he was asked about Sidhu's demand for changing the state police chief and the advocate general.

"I have told Sidhu sahab and he also knows that the names of the police officers who have completed 30 years in service have been sent to the Centre for the appointment of a DGP. "We have sent the names and the Centre will now send us a three-member panel (for the selection of a regular DGP)," he said.
