The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has removed Indian Overseas Bank from Prompt Corrective Action (PCA) Framework restrictions, news agency ANI reported on Thursday. The decision follows IOB's request to take it out of the PCA.


Under PCA, the RBI imposes business restrictions on banks with weak financial metrics. The severity of the PCA restrictions will be decided on a case to case basis.

Breaking News LIVE: Heavy rain alert in Bengal

With the depression formed in the Bay of Bengal gaining strength, the Met department has issued red alerts in East Midnapore, West Midnapore and South 24 Parganas districts in West Bengal.

The Met department has also predicted heavy to very heavy rains not only in these three districts, but in Kolkata and North 24 Parganas as well.

The district administrations were asked to remove all people residing in the low lying areas and in mud houses to the cyclone centres on Sunday itself. The fishermen have been asked not to venture into the sea till October 5.

"During Amphan, Yaas and Bulbul, the state government had made an extensive plan for evacuation, rescue and rehabilitation, which produced good results. We want to follow the same now also," a senior official of the state secretariat said.

The state government has also asked the district administrations to store dry food, water pouches and other relief materials as much possible so that there is no dearth of them.

"A central control room has been opened at the disaster management department which will be in touch with the district administrations 24x7. All leaves of the state government employees have been cancelled and they have been asked to stay prepared for any kind of eventuality," the officer added.

The West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL) has also been asked to keep an eye on the situation so that electrocution cases can be avoided.

The Kolkata Police had opened a 24-hour control room at its headquarters in Lalbazar on Saturday. Officers from Kolkata Police, NDRF, Fire Brigade and Disaster Management Department will be present in the control room.

Sources in Kolkata Police said that they have formed 22 teams for the purpose of disaster management, seven of which will be stationed in the Bhabanipur area, which will go to the bypoll on September 30.

Hours later, Razia Sultana, a part of the new 18-member ministry led by Charanjit Singh Channi, too put in her papers, expressing solidarity with the former cricketer.

China said today that it has "no choice" but to take preventive measures like travel restrictions to contain COVID-19, as it reacted to a demonstration by stranded Indian students in front of its embassy in New Delhi.


China's response came after reports from New Delhi said several Indian students, mostly studying medicine, held a demonstration in front of the Chinese embassy on Monday demanding Beijing to permit their return to rejoin their studies.


Asked for her reaction to the Indian students' demonstration in Delhi, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying told a media briefing here: "COVID-19 is still spreading in many parts of the world".


"So, in this context, the Chinese government has no choice but to take a lot of prevention and control measures," Hua said.

In a related note, sources have suggested that Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi have called a cabinet meeting at 10:30am today after a series of resognationtion after Sidhu.


At least 13 persons died in heavy showers, floods and lightning in parts of Maharashtra with the Marathwada region bearing the brunt of rain fury, while more than 560 people were rescued after the NDRF was mobilised and helicopters were deployed, officials said on Tuesday.Besides, more than 200 cattle perished or were washed away and a number of houses were damaged in torrential rains that lashed Marathwada on Sunday and Monday, causing havoc in a region which is considered a perennially drought-plagued area, they said.


Parts of the region and Mumbai received heavy showers on Tuesday also.The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast 'extremely heavy rains' at a few places in Marathwada, Mumbai and other parts of the coastal Konkan region of Maharashtra in the next 24 hours.


The Marathwada region in central Maharashtra which faced rain fury comprises eight districts - Aurangabad, Latur, Osmanabad, Parbhani, Nanded, Beed, Jalna and Hingoli. Heavy rainfall in catchment areas of the Manjara dam forced authorities to open all 18 gates of the reservoir to discharge water on Tuesday, which led to flooding in some villages in Beed district, while an alert was sounded in some neighbouring districts, the officials said.
