Himanta Biswa Sarma Replaces Sonowal As Assam Chief Minister; To Take Oath On Monday

The North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) convenor Himanta said that his new Cabinet members is likely to take oath on Monday, April 10 at 12 noon.

Himanta Biswa Sarma has been elected as the leader of legislative party in Assam by the Bhartiya Janata Party. He will replace incumbent Sarbananda Sonowal to the top post. The North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) convenor Himanta Biswa Sarma said that his new Cabinet members is likely to take oath on Monday, April 10 at 12 noon.

Sarma was unanimously elected the next Chief Minister of Assam in a key meeting where Union minister Narendra Singh Tomar and party General Secretary Arun Singh were present as central observers. Tomar was named BJP's central observers for the election of the leader of its legislative party in Assam along with general secretary Arun Singh.

Sarma's name for the post of Chief Minister in Assam was proposed by Sonowal and BJP state president Ranjeet Kumar Dass, and supported by newly elected MLA from Halflong, Nandita Gorlosa. 

Himanta Biswa Sarma crossed over from Congress before the 2014 Lok Sabha election and has risen to gain prominence over Sarbananda Sonowal. He is considered as a big factor in the party's victory in the 2016 election, the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, and the recently held assembly elections 2021 where the saffron party BJP managed to retain power easily.

Earlier on Sunday morning, Sonowal submitted his resignation to governor Jagdish Mukhi. Later, the governor met Sarma to discuss over  newly elected legislators.
