Dispur: The Bhartiya Janata Party has elected Himanta Biswa Sarma as the leader of its legislative party in Assam. Himanta Biswa Sarma will now be the new Chief Minister of the state.


After much speculations and suspense, Himanta Sarma will meet the governor of Assam at 4 pm to stake claim to form the government.


Sarma was elected the next Chief Minister of Assam in a key meeting where Union minister Narendra Singh Tomar and party General Secretary Arun Singh were present as central observers. 


According to sources, at the legislature party meeting held in Guwahati today, former CM Sonowal had proposed the name of  Sarma after Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave his approval for Sarma's elevation.


Sources also revealed that Himanta Biswa Sarma will take the oath as the new Cheif Minister of Assam on Monday.


Himanta Biswa Sarma crossed over from Congress before the 2014 Lok Sabha election and has risen to gain prominence over Sarbananda Sonowal. He is considered as a big factor in the party's victory in the 2016 election, the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, and the recently held election where BJP managed to retain power easily.
