You may encounter trouble in financial transactions if you have failed to link your Permanent Account Number (PAN) to Aadhaar card. Such PAN cards if not linked to Aadhaar becomes useless and declared "inoperative". If your PAN card is inoperative then it will turn operative soon after the linking process is completed. Also note, the income tax department has said that holders of inoperative PAN cards will have to face consequences under the Income Tax Act for not furnishing PAN. In other words, such PAN holders will not only be treated as non-PAN card holders but may also be fined a penalty of ₹10,000 under Section 272B of the Income Tax Act. Also, those who have failed to link the both won't be able to file their income tax. Here is how you can link the PAN card to Aadhaar You can check PAN-Aadhaar linking status on the Income Tax India website. Click on ‘Link Aadhaar’ and then, click on ‘Click here’, which is above the section where you fill your PAN and Aadhaar details. The new webpage will ask you for your PAN and Aadhaar number. Fill in the details and click on ‘View Link Aadhaar status’. If your PAN-Aadhaar is linked, the screen should show a confirmation message with the last four digits of your Aadhaar number. So those who haven’t linked PAN to Aadhaar card, you can do it two ways. PAN-Aadhaar card linking via SMS PAN-Aadhaar card linking via Income Tax India website  Follow the steps below for PAN-Aadhaar card linking via SMS In order to link Aadhaar card and PAN via SMS, you need ensure that both these documents have been registered under the same name. Also, note that the mobile number should also be the same as the one registered for Aadhaar. If both the requirements are fulfilled then open the messaging app and type UIDAI space 12-digit Aadhaar card number space 10-character alphanumeric PAN details and send it to 567678 or 56161. For instance, if your Aadhar number is 109886543210, and your PAN is ABCD1234E, then just type UIDAI space 109876543210 ABCD1234E and send it to 567678 or 56161. Once the SMS is send, you will get notified about the PAN-Aadhaar linking being successfully done. The other way to link Aadhaar and PAN is via the Income Tax Department of India website. Follow the steps to link PAN-Aadhaar card online The first step is to click on the IT website at incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in. Then click on 'Link Aadhaar’ on the left side which is below the ‘Quick Links’ section. Type in the PAN, Aadhaar number and other required details like your name as per the Aadhaar card, etc. In the last step you will need to fill in the captcha or request for an OTP on the registered mobile number, following which, if the details match, your PAN-Aadhaar linking will be successful.
