The exact cause of the stampede was not known but witnesses claimed that a sudden rumour of a suspected electrical short-circuit triggered a panic run. Officials of BrihanMumbai Municipal Corp (BMC) Disaster Control, however, blamed it on overcrowding on the foot over bridge due to torrential rains as people took shelter there.

President Ramnath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also expressed grief over the incident. "Saddened and shocked to know about the tragic stampede at #Elphinstone railway station, foot over bridge (sic)," Fadnavis tweeted. Following the incident, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team reached the site for rescue operation. Niket Kaushik, GRP Commissioner, informed that the exact reasons for the accident are still to be inquired into. Western Railway PRO Anil Saxena, however, said that a chaos was created as a pedestrian slipped after a heavy rainfall on the foot over-bridge and added that a probe order has been issued by the Railway Ministry to look into the cause of the incident.

At least 22 people died and more than 30 were seriously injured on Friday in a stampede at Mumbai's Elphinstone railway station. The stampede reportedly occurred at around 9.30 a.m. on foot over-bridge linking Elphinstone Road and Parel suburban railway stations.

The injured have been admitted to KEM Hospital and other nearby hospitals. Railway Minister Piyush Goyal on Friday said his ministry and the Maharashtra Government will give Rs. five lakh as ex gratia to each of the families of the 22 deceased who had lost their lives in the stampede here this morning.
