World Music Day 2023: Date, Theme And History — Here's All You Need To Know

Every year on June 21, the world celebrates World Music Day, also known as Fête de la Musique. The first World Music Day was observed in 1982 in France when people were encouraged to participate by playing music outside. World Music Day has since spread to other parts of the world, and it is now a worldwide musical celebration. On World Music Day, a variety of musicians, both professional and amateur, perform together. On this day, several concerts are held, and a wide range of musical genres are available to the general public.

Theme For World Music Day 2023: 

Every year, a theme for World Music Day is chosen. While the theme for 2023 has not yet been released, you can familiarise yourself with the previous year's theme. "Music at the Intersections" was the theme of International Music Day 2022. The goal of this theme was to inspire people to make more music and make the world a happier place.

World Music Day has been renamed "Make Music Day" for 2021. It emphasises the significance of music in bringing out the best in people and nurturing their love of music. It also emphasises the freedom to share music across all mediums and platforms.

History Behind World Music Day 2023: 

In 1982, the first International Music Day was held on the Summer Solstice. The event took place during the Fête de la Musique in Paris. The concept of World Music Day was developed by Jack Lang, a French politician. This concept was developed in collaboration with Maurice Fleuret, a music composer and radio producer. He was also well-known as a music journalist.

When they came up with the brilliant idea of celebrating World Music Day, they were both members of the French Ministry of Culture. Jack Lang approached Maurice and asked him to take the position of Director of Music and Dance at the Ministry of Culture.

Maurice then began researching cultural habits surrounding music, learning that one out of every two men in France plays a musical instrument. He then devised the idea of bringing people out of their homes on the Summer Solstice and commemorating the occasion as World Music Day.
