World Atopic Eczema Day 2023: Causes, Symptoms And Home Remedies To Cure The Problem

Every year World Atopic Eczema Day is observed on September 14. GlobalSkin and the European Federation of Allergy and Airways Diseases Patients' Associations (EFA) collaborated and coordinated this awareness day in 2018 to bring attention to the disease globally and across Europe. This day raises awareness about the disease, speaks about the burden it places on patients and carers, and recognises the need for care and treatment.
On World Atopic Eczema Day 2023, the focus on the psychosocial impact of Atopic Eczema on children and adolescents. But, before that let us know what is eczema.
What Is Eczema?
Dr Mukesh Batra, who is a Padma Shri Recipient, Founder and Chairman, of Dr Batra's Group of Companies said, "Eczema is a skin condition that, while affecting millions of individuals globally for a lifetime, is the most common skin ailment found in infants. According to a report published in India Paediatrics, the ailment has affected close to 4 million children in the country. According to statistics, around 85% of people get eczema before the age of five. The condition in approximately half of the infants gets better or clears up by the age of 3."
"Eczema resembles a rash, but it can be distinguished by red, itchy, and inflamed skin, as well as dry and scaly patches that cause significant discomfort," he further added.
Causes of Eczema:
Dr. Batra further went on to mention the causes of Eczema:
- Family History: People who have a family history of eczema, asthma, or hay fever are more inclined to inherit the condition.
- Living Conditions: Environmental stressors like allergies, irritants, and climate change can aggravate eczema symptoms.
- Food Allergies: Dust mites, pet dander, pollen, and certain foods are all common allergies.
Treating Eczema Through Homeopathy:

Treating Eczema Through Ayurveda:

She went on to list down some ayurvedic home remedies to soothe eczema.
- Oatmeal Soothing Bath: Oatmeal is a natural anti-inflammatory and moisturizer. An Oatmeal Soothing Bath is a therapeutic soak combining finely ground oatmeal with warm water to relieve skin irritation and itchiness.
- Neem Oil: Neem, known for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, is beneficial for eczema. Mix a few drops of neem oil with a carrier oil like coconut oil and apply to affected areas.
- Turmeric Paste: Create a paste by mixing turmeric powder with water. Apply this paste to eczema patches, leave it for 15 minutes, then rinse off gently. Turmeric's anti-inflammatory properties can reduce redness and itching.
- Aloe Vera Gel: Aloe vera is renowned for its skin-healing properties. Apply fresh aloe vera gel to eczema-prone skin to soothe irritation and promote healing.
- Dietary Adjustments: Follow an eczema-friendly diet by avoiding spicy, processed, and allergenic foods. Include cooling and anti-inflammatory foods like ghee, coconut oil, and leafy greens.
- Hydration: Keep your skin well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water and applying natural moisturizers like coconut oil or shea butter.
- Avoid Triggers: Identify and avoid triggers that worsen your eczema, such as certain fabrics, allergens, or harsh soaps.
- Stress Management: Manage stress through yoga and meditation, as stress can exacerbate eczema.
