New Delhi: Krishna Janmashtami, also known as Gokulashtami, is a grand festival celebrated throughout India to commemorate the birth of Lord Krishna. Krishna Janmashtami falls on the Ashtami of Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadrapad (the dark fortnight of the moon) or the 8th day of the waning phase of the moon, according to the Hindu calendar.
Devotees take Sankalpa after finishing morning rituals and perform Krishna Puja at midnight, according to Vedic timekeeping. The idol of Baby Krishna is cleaned with Pancha Amrit, dressed in new clothes and ornaments, and worshipped in a cradle with flowers, fruits, and sweets. Dahi Handi programmes are also held because Lord Krishna enjoyed Makhan (white butter), curd, and milk.

Fasting Regulations for Krishna Janmashtami:
During the Janmashtami fast, no grains should be consumed until the fast is broken the next day after sunrise. All rules that apply to Ekadashi fasting should also apply to Janmashtami fasting.
Breaking the fast, or parna, should be done at the appropriate time. Parana is performed the next day after sunrise when Ashtami Tithi and Rohini Nakshatra are completed for Krishna Janmashtami fasting. If Ashtami Tithi and Rohini Nakshatra do not end before Sunset, then the fast can be broken during the day when either Ashtami Tithi or Rohini Nakshatra has ended. When neither Ashtami Tithi nor Rohini Nakshatra has passed by Sunset or even Hindu Midnight (also known as Nishita Time), one should wait until they have.
