A recent spike in Covid cases around the world has alarmed people, especially those who are planning to travel around the globe around New Year. As a precautionary step, several countries are taking preventive measures to curb the spread of coronavirus. Covid Cases Surge In Countries Ahead Of New Year 2023


China: The world's most populated country China, tops the chart in terms of the number of covid cases arising, according to several reports. After Beijing lifted the Covid restrictions earlier, about 250 million people (18 per cent of the population) were infected with the coronavirus during the first 20 days of December, according to Chinese officials.


In the latest development, the National Health Commission of China said that it will no longer release the data related to Covid cases from December 25.


“Relevant COVID information will be published by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention for reference and research,” NHC said in a statement, as per Reuters.


Japan: Japanese health authorities reported on December 24 that 371 people lost lives in a single day due to the Covid infection. The fatalities were the highest for a single day since the outbreak of the pandemic in 2020. Japan, which is going through the eighth wave, is reporting about two lakh fresh infections every day.


United States: The US is hit by a so-called "tripledemic", amid rising cases of Covid, Influenza and RSV cases. Recently, the US registered over 15 lakh cases of Covid in the past 28 days. On December 21, the total number of Covid cases passed the 100 million mark.


South Korea: South Korea registered more than 65,000 cases on December 23. However, due to a decrease in the number of Covid tests done during the Christmas weekend, the country registered less than 30,000 cases on Monday, December 26. The country confirmed 25,545 new Covid infections, including 67 from overseas, bringing the total to 28,684,600, as reported by news agency Yonhap citing the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA).


Among European countries, Germany and France have also seen a drastic increase in Covid cases. While Germany reported more than 40,000 cases every day in the past few days, France on the other hand recorded more than 10 lakh cases in past four weeks.
