Mysterious Sound Rattles Bengaluru Residents, Social Media Abuzz With Bizarre Theories

Authorities are investigating the matter and looking into the cause of the sound but there has been no damage so far.

Bengaluru: At a time when the nationwide lockdown has eased in several states with empty roads starting to witness vehicular movements once again, Bengaluru netizens were shocked to witness sonic like boom sound followed by vibrations in Whitefield area on Wednesday. The mysterious sounds were heard by locals stirring a lot of theories around the incidents as reactions started pouring in. Some referred to the noise as sonic booms which typically generates a high amount of sound energy similar to an explosion or a thunderclap to the human ear. According to reports, the sound was audible as far as Cooke Town, Vivek Nagar, Ramamurthy Nagar, Hosur Road, HAL, Old Madras Road, Ulsoor, Kundanahalli, Kammanahalli, CV Raman Nagar, Whitefield and HSR Layout in the city. Even authorities are also investigating the matter and looking into the cause of the sound.  There has been no damage so far. "A booming sound was heard across Eastern Bengaluru. We are trying to ascertain the source of the sound. We have conducted searches on the ground in the Whitefield area but so far there is no damage to anything, " said MN Anucheth, DCP, Whitefield Division, Bengaluru to news agency ANI. The sound was felt like a ‘boom,’ and a ‘thunderous noise,’ while others took it for earthquake, but left the citizens jolted triggering fear among many. "I was in the middle of my lunch. It was around 1:30 PM. Suddenly there was a loud thud as if there was some dynamite charge nearby. The windows and the floor started vibrating as it happens during an earthquake. It is definitely unusual, in fact, a bit scary as well. I could also see a lot of rumours pouring in the social media soon after,” said Anirban Nandi, a resident of Ozone Evergreens, Haralur. However, rumours related to the earthquake were refuted because no ground motion was detected confirming that the sounds were not related to an earthquake. Meanwhile, a geologist, told a Bengaluru-based news channel that the brief tremors were not of the earthquake. According to News9, the explosions were a result of ‘air molecule oscillation, a change in wind direction and rapid cloud movement’. Some also hinted at fighter jet probably went supersonic. According to One India,  several choppers were seen during the day. However, nothing has been ascertained so far. Here are Twitteraties' reactions that jolted many people in the southern city
