Lucknow: This village decides to organise dowry-free weddings
New Delhi: The social obligation of giving away money and jewellery along with our daughters often resulted in a downgraded quality of lives for people in Lucknow.
Mortgaged lands and other belongings were byproducts of the desire to organise a 'grand' wedding but a recent revelation in the Latifpur village of the city has changed the face of the event.
The Gram Sabha took a step closer to bringing about social change when they found out that 400 out of the 450 families in the village were facing a debt burden due to the expenses that are induced by weddings.
To cut down the heavy expenditure, reportedly, the village has decided to organise dowry-free community weddings . A corpus fund of Rs. 2 lakhs for lending interest-free loans in crisis situations that include life and death, urgent health needs and weddings, has been formed by the gram sabha.
The expenditure that comes along with all of the upset of a daughter's ‘bidai’ has always already been too much to bear for a father. In such a scenario, the inclusion of dowry free community weddings in the gram sabha corporate plan reflects very strongly the nation's desire to put an end to the obligations and catalyze social empowerment.
