Significance of Ugadi, Gudi Padwa 2021

Ugadi is popularly referred to as Yugadi and celebrated with much fervour while Gudi Padwa is observed across Maharashtra and Goa. While these festivals are celebrated differently in places, Ugadi marks the beginning of a new Samvatsara. Yugadi is a combination of two words, yug (era) and adi (new beginning) that signifies new beginnings on Yugadi. According to mythology, on this day Lord Brahma created the world and that is why it is celebrated as the first day of the Hindu calendar.

Both the festivals are considered as the beginning of the harvest season. The first day of the Hindu Lunisolar calendar month of Chaitra typically falls in April. The calendar considers the position of the Moon and Sun to divide the year into months and days.  On the other hand, Gudi means Lord Brahma's flag and Padwa signifies the first day of the new phase of the moon. After offering prayers to Lord Brahma, devotees hoist a Gudi (doll) to invoke Lord Vishnu (the saviour) and call upon his blessings. In fact, people use inverted copper or silver pot to depict the face which is decorated with green or red brocade. The Gudi is covered with a silk cloth and the colours yellow and red symbolize fertility and well-being.

Just like Ugadi celebrations, families spend time together. People also join street processions, enjoy dancing, and indulging in festive foods.

On Ugadi,  people buy new clothes for gifting purposes, draw colourful patterns on the floor namely rangoli or muggulu, and wish their near and dear ones while feasting on festive dishes.   On Ugadi, people make a special dish called Ugadi Pacchadi which comprises raw mangoes, neem flowers, tamarind, jaggery and salt while people in Maharastra observe the festival by eating Shrikhand Puri. In the Northern part of the country, the day marks the start of nine days Chaitra Navratri Puja.
