The Story Behind Chhath Puja:

According to the popular tales about Chhath Puja, there was a monarch named Priyavrat who was married to a queen named Malini. Except for a kid, the Royal couple had name, fame, and all the luxuries. The King then sought Sage Kashyapa's blessings and performed the Putreshthi Yagna. As a result, Malini became pregnant and gave birth to a child. However, the royal couple was saddened when their infant was born dead. The king attempted suicide because he was heartbroken over the loss of his child.

But, before he could take his own life, Goddess Sashti came in front of him. She identified herself as Sashti and requested him to perform puja on the Sashti Tithi of Kartik Shukla Paksha by observing a vrat.

The King, who had lost all hope, sought the Goddess' blessings, observed a vrat, and followed all the rituals. Queen Malini eventually gave birth to a child. Since then, the tradition of keeping a Chhath vrat has been prevalent.

Other legends include those from Ramayana and Mahabharata. Following their Raj Tilak ritual, Lord Rama and Mata Sita conducted the Chhath puja vrat. The royal couple honoured the Sun God by performing puja and observing a vrat.

The legend associated with Mahabharata is that of Karna who was born to Kunti with the Sun God's blessings and worshipped his father every day. As a result, the practice of paying homage to Surya Bhagwan began.
