Basant Panchami

According to the legend, when Lord Brahma, created the world and gave a place for everything to be in it. In order to include everyone and fill up the world, Lord Brahma created trees, forests, mountains, rivers, and living beings. Even after creating so much, Lord Brahma could see something was lacking, he could not understand what he could do.

After much thought, Lord Brahma picked up his 'kamandal' (pot of water) and took the water in his hand, and sprinkled it. As soon as he did that, a Goddess appeared. She had a 'Veena' (a string instrument) in one hand and a book in another. In the third hand was a garland and the fourth hand was raised so as to give blessings.

Lord Brahma was pleased to see this and this goddess was called Saraswati. As soon as Goddess Saraswati touched the strings of her Veena with her fingers, musical tones were created to the effect that they gave rhythm and rhyme to all the things in nature. That day was the day of Basant Panchami. Since then, Goddess Saraswati is being worshipped in 'Dev Lok' and 'Mrityuloka'.
