Udupi: Police File Two Cases Amid Row Over Hidden Camera In College Washroom

Udupi Police has denied any communal angle to the incident and said the college management had taken disciplinary action at their level.

Udupi Police in Karnataka filed two cases on Wednesday after a group of students secretly filmed another student in the women's toilet of a medical college, ANI reported. One case has been filed against three college students and college administration regarding deletion of the purported video. The second case is linked to uploading of the hidden camera video on YouTube channels.

Police has denied any communal angle to the incident, saying "misinformation" was being spread and urged the public not to believe rumours, PTI reported.

On Tuesday, District Superintendent of Police Hakay Akshay Machhindra, addressing reporters in Udupi, said the college management had taken disciplinary action at their level.

The SP said the victim had informed the college management that the video was made for fun and later deleted, and was not circulated, PTI reported.

The college has suspended the three female students following the incident.

The college management said an enquiry was held and based on the investigations, students were suspended as part of disciplinary action.

The college director, addressing a media briefing, said the students had apologised for their actions.

The director said police also carried out a probe in the presence of the parents of students involved. The mobile phones of students have been handed over to police, PTI quoted the college director as saying.

She said the students stated that the video was made only for fun.

On Tuesday, Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna urged the police to register a suo motu case against the students who allegedly kept hidden cameras in the women's washroom.

He said the three students had brought disrepute to the district and claimed that he suspected the role of "unseen hands" behind the incident. Udupi is an educational hub in Karnataka and houses several colleges.

Suvarna said the matter would be brought to the notice of the Chief Minister and Home Minister, PTI reported.
