Three minors arrested for assaulting Swiss couple in Fatehpur Sikri
New Delhi [India], October 26 (ANI): Uttar Pradesh Police on Thursday arrested three minor boys for assaulting a young Swiss couple in Agra's Fatehpur Sikri.
"Out of the four accused, three have been arrested and all three are minors," the Director General of state police (DGP) PRO said.
The couple, hailing from Lausanne in Switzerland, was allegedly brutally thrashed by a group of youths in Agra's Fatehpur Sikri on Sunday. The duo was reportedly seriously injured in the attack and is currently admitted in a hospital in Delhi.
An FIR was registered against four unknown people earlier in the day.
Meanwhile, Union Tourism Minister K.J. Alphons wrote a letter to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressing his concern over the incident.
"I am deeply concerned that two Switzerland citizens were attacked and injured at Fathehpur Sikri yesterday. You would kindly appreciate that such incidents negatively impact our image and are detrimental to our efforts in promoting India as a tourism destination. A fast and speedy response in identifying and ensuring a speedy action, including conviction of the guilty, would be reassuring, as also a good message of our efforts to prevent recurrence of such incidents," the letter read.
The Embassy of Switzerland in New Delhi said, "In the framework of consular protection services, the Embassy is providing support to them. For reasons of privacy and data protection, the Embassy cannot communicate any further information in this regard."
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) officials today met the couple at the Apollo Hospital in Delhi.
EAM Sushma Swaraj also sought for a report from the Uttar Pradesh Government over the alleged harassment.
The Swiss pair has alleged that they were followed by a group of people while ambling near the railway station. Later, the group started passing comments at them and forced the couple to stop and take selfies. The group's harassment soon turned violent and they suffered critical injuries. (ANI)
