Modi evokes his humble beginnings only to gain sympathy: Congress

Bengaluru [India], November 27 (ANI): Senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge said on Monday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi evokes his humble beginnings only to gain sympathy and votes of the poor.

The Congress leader in the Lok Sabha was responding to Modi's statement that he might have sold tea to earn a living, but never sold his nation.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi is an expert in marketing. To polarize the votes of poor he is saying that we are making fun of them, which is not true," he said here.

"When a person holds a post, discussions are done on his performance and not on his economic status. Many poor have been the president in the past. A farmer has also been the Prime Minister of this country," Kharge added.

"If he really had something in his heart for the poor, then he would not have withdrawn subsides," he further said.

In his speech in Rajkot in Gujarat today, Modi said he might have sold tea to earn a living, but never sold his nation, responding to a picture, which Congress' "volunteer" group tweeted last week, making fun of prime minister's origins.

In his Rajkot speech, the Prime Minister also said the battle for Gujarat was between development (vikas) and dynastic politics (vanshvaad).

To this Kharge retaliated, "Stating that Congress party is a dynastic party is wrong because if it had been then Manmohan Singh would not have been the Prime Minister for 10 years." (ANI)
