Mishap averted at Mumbai airport

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], July 10 (ANI): A major mishap was averted at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai after an Air India express aircraft overshot the runway on Tuesday afternoon.

No casualties were reported.

A Mumbai bound Air India Express flight IX 213 from Vijayawada which landed at 2.51 pm overshot due to heavy rains in the city. The aircraft is now being inspected by the engineers at the Mumbai Airport.

There were 89 people on board including crew when it overshot 10 feet beyond the runway end, confirmed an Air India Express official.

"Air India Express flight IX 213 from Vijayawada to Mumbai while landing on alternate runway 14 due to the closure of main runway 27, stopped 10 feet beyond the runway end on the paved stop way. The aircraft had touched down correctly and used maximum braking but due to the slippery conditions caused by heavy rains, the aircraft could stop only at the stop way. No damage to the aircraft or airport property or injuries to any person was reported and the aircraft taxied on its own power to the parking bay," said Air India Express spokesperson.

In a similar incident in 2010, the Air India Express flight IX 812 from Dubai to Mangalore overshot at the Mangalore Airport while landing. Unlike this incident, the aircraft caught fire as it fell down a hillside after overshooting the runway and 158 people on board were killed. (ANI)
