Kerala: Transgenders stage protest against ill-treatment by police

Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) [India], Mar. 1 (ANI): Amid growing atrocities in the state, transgenders from across the state staged a protest here against their mistreatment at the hands of the state police.

Members from the community observed a day's protest in front of the state secretariat in the state capital as a mark of growing atrocities against them.

"These days, transgenders in the state are facing attacks from the police as well as the public. They are not considered human beings. They become subject to attacks wherever they go, and this needs to stop," a protestor told ANI.

Furthermore, Sreekutty, a transgender activist, argued that although Kerala was the first state in the country to pass a transgender bill, no identity cards have been issued by the government so far.

About hundreds of transgenders participated in the protest, and appealed to the government to consider their issues.

In January, a transgender woman was allegedly molested and attacked by a man in Kerala's Malappuram.

According to the victim, the incident took place when she went out with her friends for dinner and were confronted by a local goon, Shihab, who reportedly abused and attacked the victim. (ANI)
