BHU vice chancellor should resign or be dismissed: Congress on his remark on girl students

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], September 29 (ANI): The Congress on Friday said that Banaras Hindu University (BHU) vice chancellor Girish Chandra should step down or be fired over his remarks on the girl students who carried out protests in the campus.

Speaking to ANI here, Maharashtra Congress spokesperson Raju Waghmare said, "See if the vice chancellor's thoughts are like this, he does not deserve to be there on this post even one minute. He should resign or should be sacked, because he can make such statements in the future as well."

Asserting that this kind of culture and behaviour could not be tolerated in country like India, Waghmare retiterated his appeal for his resignation.

"If the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) or the HRD Ministry has little shame they should immediately sack the vice chancellor," he added.

In a video clip accessed by a leading news channel, the BHU vice chancellor was heard saying, " Get the girl who was lathi-charged. You have to be honest too. No one would accept their own mistake. Why didn't you explain it to her?"

Commenting on the lathi-charge, the VC stated that "You talk of duty, do you follow it yourself? Was this dutiful of you all that you took the issue of the girl being assaulted to the public?"

Meanwhile, the BHU administration has assured that an action would be taken against those found guilty as soon as the concerned committee probing the recent incident of molestation comes with its report.

A clash broke out between students and police on September 23 outside the BHU campus after police lathi-charged the students, who were protesting against alleged molestation of a girl.

An FIR was also lodged against 1,000 BHU students and several were asked to vacate hostels.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) issued a notice to the Chief Secretary, the Director General of Police (DG) Uttar Pradesh and the BHU Vice-Chancellor seeking a detailed report on the matter and submit his response within four weeks.

The NHRC, in its statement, said, "Suo motu cognisance taken in the subsequent use of unwarranted manhandling and thrashing of agitating students, mostly women, by UP police." (ANI)
