Maharashtra Reports 8,067 New COVID Cases, Nearly 50% More Than Yesterday. Mumbai Major Contributor
Among the new infections are four Omicron variant cases reported in the state.
New Delhi: Maharashtra on Friday recorded 8,067 new Coronavirus cases along with eight fatalities. The new cases are 2,699 (nearly 50 per cent) more than yesterday, news agency PTI reported the Maharashtra health department as stating.

As per the Maharashtra health department, 8,067 new cases were reported in the state today. On Thursday, the state had reported 5,368 new Coronavirus cases.
1,766 COVID-19 patients were discharged today taking the overall recoveries to 65,09,096. With this, the recovery rate in the state stands at 97.46 per cent.
With 8 deaths, the case fatality rate in Maharashtra reached 2.11 per cent.
The capital city Mumbai has contributed to the caseload majorly as it recorded 5,631 fresh COVID cases wherein 4,223 patients are reported to be asymptomatic. The city also logged 548 recoveries, and one fatality today.
On Friday, the country’s financial capital recorded 3,671 infections.
Omicron Cases In Maharashtra
Four cases of Omicron variant infection have been reported in the state. “These cases are one each from Vasai Virar, Navi Mumbai, Meera Bhainder and Panvel,” the health department statement informed.
To date, a total of 454 patients infected with Omicron variant have been reported in the state.
Meanwhile, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) informed that in the 7th batch of genome sequencing of 282 samples collected in Mumbai, 55 per cent are of Omicron, 13 per cent patients of Delta variant, 32 per cent of Delta derivatives. Out of 156 people infected with Omicron, only 9 needed hospital treatment, news agency ANI reported.
Mumbai Police Impose 5 PM To 5 AM Curbs On Visiting Public Places
Amid the worrying surge in Coronavirus cases, Mumbai Police on Friday issued an order prohibiting people from visiting beaches, open grounds, sea faces, promenades, gardens, parks or similar public places between 5 pm and 5 am daily till January 15.
DCP (operations) S Chaitanya issued the order under section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), which came into force from 1 pm on Friday and will be effective till January 15, unless withdrawn earlier, reported PTI.
“The city continues to be threatened with COVID-19 pandemic. In light of the increase in cases and emergence of the new Omicron variant, and with a view to prevent danger to human life, health and safety and to curb transmission of the virus, people are prohibited from visiting beaches, open grounds, sea faces, promenades, gardens, parks or similar public places from 5 pm to 5 am next day,” the order stated.
In case of marriages, whether in enclosed or open spaces, the maximum number of attendees shall be restricted to 50 persons.
“In case of any gathering or programme, whether social, cultural, political or religious, whether in enclosed or open to sky spaces, the maximum number of attendees shall be restricted to 50 persons,” the order read.
In case of the last rites, only 20 persons will be allowed to remain present.
Those flouting the order will attract punishment under section 188 of the IPC in addition to the penal provisions under the Epidemic Diseases Act and the National Disaster Management Act, the DCP stated in the order.
