New Delhi: In yet another milestone for India's vaccination feat, an indigenously-developed jab against Coronavirus - Covaxin - has now been recognised 'globally' as a "universal vaccine for adults and children".

"COVAXIN is now a universal vaccine for adults and children. Our goals of developing a global vaccine against COVID-19 have been achieved and all product development for licensure has been completed," news agency ANI quoted Bharat Biotech saying in an official statement.

Hyderabad-based vaccine manufacturer also said that its goal of developing a global vaccine against Covid-19 has been achieved.

The development comes hours after Bharat Biotech had sought from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) regular market approval for Covaxin. The vaccine is currently only authorised for emergency use in the country.

The company has submitted detailed information regarding chemistry, manufacturing and controls, along with pre-clinical and clinical data with the drug regulator while seeking regular market authorisation for Covaxin.

However, news agency PTI reported that the pharma giant is yet to submit the full follow up data of clinical trial of Covaxin to DCGI.

Meanwhile, 12 per cent of the total Covid-19 vaccine jabs administered in the country so far  comprises of Covaxin and it is the only jab that is being given to youngsters in the age-group of 15-18 years.
