Covid-19: Turmeric Cure And Other Myths That Are Taking Over Social Media During India Lockdown

With the rise in number of Coronavirus cases, people are in the rush to try everything to protect themselves. Relying on social media and messaging apps for cures and remedies about Coronavirus only spreads misinformation.

New Delhi: With the rise in number of Coronavirus cases, people are in the rush to try everything to protect themselves and their loved ones from COVID – 19. This has resulted in the many home remedies and false cures to circulate. Relying on social media and messaging apps for cures and remedies about Coronavirus only spreads misinformation.
  • Turmeric is considered as a natural antiseptic and has health benefits. However, consuming or applying Turmeric does not cure or prevent COVID -19. There has been no evidence that suggests turmeric as a cure, WHO advises to eat a regular balanced diet and drinking 8 glasses of water as usual.
  • Drinking cow urine does not cure or protect you from COVID – 19. There has been no evidence that suggests cow urine as a cure for COVID – 19.
  • Gargling with bleach does not prevent COVID – 19. Bleach or Sodium Hypochlorite is harmful and should not be consumed under any circumstances as it can cause very serious damage to internal organs.
  • Drinking water every 15 minutes will not flush out Coronavirus. The virus attacks the respiratory organs in our body, therefore pouring water down the food pipe will have no effect on it. WHO suggests drinking 8 glasses of water a day as a normal daily routine. Stay hydrated!
  • Karela (bitter gourd) or lemon juice is rich in Vitamin – C and Iron but its consumption does not cure or prevent COVID – 19. A normal healthy body can only absorb the nutrients it requires rest is disposed of. Eating a well-balanced diet is the way to go to maintain all the nutrients your body requires.
  • Holding your breath is not a way to test for COVID – 19. Difficulty breathing is just one of the symptoms of COVID-19 that some of the patients have shown. However, it is not necessary for all patients to show identical symptoms.

If you come across any such remedies or tips, do not forward it; spreading misinformation can hurt those around you. Rely only on medical centers, websites and WHO for factual information. If confused, check with your doctor. Follow advice that has been suggested by WHO, which are:
  • Wash your hands frequently for 20 seconds with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand rub.
  • Maintain social distance.
  • If you’re out buying groceries, make sure you stay one meter away from people.
  • Avoid crowded spaces at all costs.
  • Pay via payment apps to avoid contact or use alcohol-based hand rub if you’re handling cash.
  • Do not leave your house unnecessarily.
  • Avoid touching your face, especially your mouth or eyes.
  • “Hands touch many surfaces and can pick up viruses. Once contaminated, hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose or mouth. From there, the virus can enter your body and can make you sick,” the WHO stated on its website.
  • Droplets can spread virus so cough/sneeze in your elbow or a tissue and dispose of it immediately industbin with a lid.
  • If you notice any symptoms, self-isolate yourself and seek advice from your healthcare provider.
  • Do not seek help from internet sources.
