We Got GTA Vice City Nextgen Edition Before GTA 6: Here's What's New

Initially conceived as a mod requiring the original game, GTA Vice City Nextgen Edition has evolved into an independent, fully functional release.

GTA 6 release date is still up in the air. But, before that, the much-anticipated GTA Vice City Nextgen Edition has finally launched, delivering a fresh way for gamers to revisit the iconic Vice City universe. Best of all, this enhanced edition no longer requires the original game to play.

This ambitious project brings the entire mission set, map, and content from the original Grand Theft Auto: Vice City to the advanced RAGE Engine. Fans of the classic instalment will find plenty to appreciate, including refined visuals and nostalgic gameplay elements.

What’s New in Vice City Nextgen Edition?

The remastered city and weapons draw inspiration from the Definitive Edition, while the cars, character models, and pedestrian designs are lifted directly from the Xbox version. Although the mod does not increase the polygon count of 3D models, it enhances them with improved textures.

Players can also look forward to experiencing all original radio stations, familiar cutscenes, and a distinctive visual style from the original release. Additionally, better lighting and enhanced particle effects provide subtle but impactful improvements.

From Mod to Standalone Game

Initially conceived as a mod requiring the original game, the project evolved into an independent, fully functional release. Revolution Team, the modding group behind the development, made this shift following an unexpected move by Take-Two Interactive.

In a statement, the developers explained:

"Initially, the modification was planned to require the original game in order to show respect to the publisher. However, over the past two days, we have completely rebuilt the project, and it is now available as a standalone “installation-ready package”. Just download, install, and play. There are no issues with version compatibility since the mod is now fully autonomous."

The Backstory: A Clash with Take-Two Interactive

Just days before the scheduled launch, Take-Two Interactive reportedly deleted Revolution Team’s YouTube channel without prior warning. This move, perceived by the developers as hostile, prompted them to release the project independently.

While players can currently download the mod, it's unclear how long it will remain available due to potential takedown attempts by Take-Two Interactive.
