How Much Money Will GTA 6 Make In A Year Post Its Release? Here's What We Know
GTA 6 is expected to sell more than 40 million copies within the first year of its release.
GTA 6: Take-Two Interactive's Grand Theft Auto 6 is poised to dominate 2025's entertainment landscape, with projected first-year revenues of $3.2 billion, according to research firm DFC Intelligence, as reported by the Financial Times. Set to launch this fall on PlayStation and Xbox consoles, the eagerly awaited title is expected to generate over $1 billion in pre-orders alone, doubling the sales performance of its predecessor and surpassing 2024's highest-grossing films, such as Inside Out 2 ($1.7 billion) and Deadpool & Wolverine ($1.3 billion).
DFC Intelligence predicts the game will sell 40 million copies within its first year, with total sales potentially exceeding 100 million units by 2030. Development costs for the blockbuster title are estimated to range from several hundred million to as much as $2 billion.
The CEO of Take-Two, Strauss Zelnick, told Financial Times that he doesn't have a habit of claiming victory prematurely, but he expects developer Rockstar Games to "deliver something absolutely phenomenal." Zelnick said, "Unlike many of our competitors, every one of our releases inside a franchise has done better than the prior release – this has been true for like 20 years – and in most instances that isn't the case in the video game business. In most cases you'll see a steady decline release after release, but that isn't the case with us because we take our time and we really focus on presenting something to the audience that they just haven't seen before."
Gaming Sector's Future
The success of Grand Theft Auto 6 comes during a period of slowed growth in the gaming industry. According to market research firm Ampere Analysis, global gaming spending is expected to grow by just 2.2 per cent in 2025, reaching $195 billion.
Meanwhile, the sector has faced significant challenges, including over 33,000 layoffs since 2022, with nearly 15,000 occurring in 2024 alone.
Set in Vice City, the game introduces a Bonnie and Clyde-inspired duo as its protagonists. The first trailer for GTA VI, released in December 2023, has amassed over 225 million views on YouTube, highlighting extraordinary anticipation for the series’ first major installment in more than a decade.
