Elon Musk Wants To 'Make Games Great Again': Here's How He Plans To Do That

Musk tweeted, "Too many game studios are owned by massive corporations."

Tech mogul Elon Musk has unveiled plans to step into the gaming industry by launching a new studio under his artificial intelligence company, xAI. The announcement, shared via X (formerly Twitter), marks Musk’s latest effort to expand his influence into yet another major sector, following his ventures in space, electric vehicles, and social media.

Musk shared his vision on November 27, expressing dissatisfaction with the dominance of large corporations in the gaming world. “Too many game studios that are owned by massive corporations,” Musk wrote, before declaring that his new studio would aim to “make games great again.” This project will be spearheaded by xAI, a company Musk founded in March 2023 to drive advancements in artificial intelligence and scientific discovery.

Leveraging AI For Gaming

xAI, best known for its conversational AI tool Grok, positions itself as a pioneer in using AI to unravel complex challenges and expand humanity’s understanding of the universe.

Musk’s new gaming studio plans to leverage these AI capabilities to innovate within the gaming landscape, though specific details about projects or timelines remain unclear.

Musk's No Stranger To Gaming

While Musk’s experience in game development is limited, he has made headlines for his involvement in gaming culture. From earning a debated top rank in Diablo 4 to sharing unconventional builds in Elden Ring, his forays have drawn both intrigue and scepticism. Musk’s gaming commentary and occasional public gaming appearances have also faced criticism, including being mocked during a high-profile Valorant tournament.

The announcement comes as Musk continues to foster a close relationship with US President-elect Donald Trump, a figure known for supporting the business ventures of his allies. As Musk’s gaming studio takes shape, the industry is left wondering whether his bold ambitions will disrupt gaming’s status quo or simply stir further debate. One thing is certain — Musk’s next move will not go unnoticed.
